I would prefer to see a player from a disadvantaged country be given the opportunity. I’m not saying that players like Cardwell and Fisher aren’t good for the game, but their capacity to be ambassadors not only for the sport but for women in marginalised communities is not the same as players such as Proscovia and Kumwenda. Therefore I think Proscovia, Cholhok or Mvula would be the best option. I also think that these three players are far more athletically gifted and if they’re given the professional environment that players like Venter have already been exposed to, they’ll go on to achieve great things. They’re also far higher percentage shooters and that’s really what Magic need after last season’s statistics. Not only for themselves but for the countries they come from. Fisher and Cardwell can just go to SSN where there are unlimited imports if they’re good enough.
ALM’s GA court play came a long way this year, she just needs to work on landing the shots when the pressure is on. I think I’d be targeting one of the imports, ALM and then either Williams or someone like Pelasio. Having a strong target to build around over a number of years is their way back into the finals in my opinion. I don’t really rate McPhee but if she can work on her court play and her accuracy maybe they can make room for her as well as an impact player.
