Ekenasio clearly learnt enough in Australia to be put directly into the Ferns line without even attending a Pulse training session. Sitting two years behind Nat Medhurst would be good for any GA’s development. Obviously she’s gone on to be a far greater player for New Zealand but she was developed in the Australian pathway. Ekenasio wouldn’t have become a Silver Fern if it wasn’t for the Australian underage programs. But I’m still glad that she was given every opportunity to develop here and then become an elite representative for the Fern because she’s contributed immensely to world netball and to the community she has built for herself in New Zealand. That’s where I don’t understand this argument that these professional leagues are exclusively for Domestic athletes and giving overseas athletes an opportunity is a complete waste.
