Australia claimed their 7th world title, but this event will forever be remembered for one of the biggest upsets in netball history. This set up a much earlier than expected meeting between Aust and NZ, which Australia won by just one goal, thus relegating the kiwis to the playoff for third. The star of the tournament for South Africa was shooter Irene van Dyk, who would later go on to be a hero for the Silver Ferns. But here she was their nemesis.
