Back to Sydney 24 years after the successful 1991 event. It was another success with the world record netball attendance being broken 3 times. 16752 watched the final and that is now the record. A quirky new competition format was tried, in order to get closer matches in the group stages, but it was terribly unfair to teams outside the top 8. NZ beat Australia in the group match, but then when they met a week later in the final, it was Australia who got out of the blocks sensationally to lead 16-7 at 1/4 time thanks to a brilliant first Q from Aust captain Laura Geitz. The Silver Ferns narrowed the gap in each of the last 3 quarters but the Diamonds managed to hold on 58-55 and win their 11th title.
