It’s umpiring, not refereeing, but yeah, okay…
Talk about way to ruin a crucial game with subpar umpiring. I thought we got robbed. Even though the bad calls went both ways, the Ferns seemed to be on the end of several runs of poor calls where possession was given to the Diamonds multiple times in a row. Can’t imagine how off putting that would have been for the players. Sometimes touch contacts were called and then at other times defenders were climbing over the back of attacking players and nothing at all called.
What umpiring had the Singaporean umpire done prior to this game? Wouldn’t even have been at the standard of provincial leagues in Oz and NZ. Not really her fault being chucked in there, the people to blame are the ones who appointed her. I’d actually prefer to see one aussie umpire and one NZ umpire in these games. It couldn’t be worse than what we saw today.
Would be good if the broadcasters showed more slo mo replays of some of the umpires calls. There needs to be some scrutiny of the quality of the umpires umpiring these important games.

As soon as Mes was called 5 times for contact in the 1st 4 min of the game, it was all over. The umpire was in the wrong position to call them, there was one where Mes was nowhere near anyone and got called for breathing.
66 penalties is massive against the Ferns. The Singapore umpire was so totally out of her depth, but bad calls did go both ways, Gretel got done for stepping a few times, didn’t look like she moved. But IMO Ferns copped more of the garbage ones. It’s umpiring, not refereeing, but yeah, okay…
Not to mention the fouls.

Yeah, the calls on Mes were rubbish. She did nothing!
Often the umpires were behind play, couldn’t see the ball clearly. It is just a shame that a massive clash had umpires who isn’t up to the speed and standard YET.
The lady from Singapore, has she umpired a Trans Tasman match before? ANZ? Suncorp? England international? You could tell Lisa and Noels were both frustrated with calls.
It’s not a friendly game. It was a decider between the BEST 2 teams in the world.
There was one call where it was stepping NZ so Aust went to set the ball where it SHOULD have been taken but they got called for stepping while setting up. Strange.Positives, Braz showed Lisa that she is the top WD in Aust. Should have been at Worlds. Turner is a great GD and Tippett FINALLY played a whole match. World class GA.
NZ, the fight back! Eke wasn’t training all week so that is why Mes started. Rore Folau and Karaka all played well.
It’s time to develop Souness and Poi in January. We need some better midcourt options. Crampton went missing.
Burger at GD will improve with more time. Faka Watson Jury Karaka SB to build some solid connections with Burger going forward.
Folau is best shooter in the world. Ability to shoot from anywhere and even change her game style after 150 games is so impressive.
She will be hard to replace, but Noels developed Koenen into the player she is today so she can identify and develop talentThe Singaporean umpire has umpired top tests before (and been just as bad). I remember that barbed wire tattoo on her arm!
Situation was this… there were three umpires in charge of the first 3 tests (Louise Travis, Tracy-Ann Griffiths & Kate Stephenson) but Louise Travis obviously couldn’t commit to the whole time and had to go home before the last test, so they had Joan Yuliani down as her replacement for this game. But WHY wasn’t she simply made a reserve? Why did she have to be one of the 2 on court umpires?
Singapore are ranked 28th in the world, can you imagine at ref from the 28th ranked Rugby team (Germany) having a Ref doing one of the biggest games of the year…….
Joan is a rubbish umpire, can’t count, clearly isn’t fit, and looks to have a new Tattoo form the last time I saw her.A massive congratulations to @SilverFernsNZ dead eye shooter, Maria Folau on game 150 for the Silver Ferns!!!!! 😱🙌🏽
Not even sure where to begin, but what a truly amazing achievement.

So Noelene, NZ are not a 60 penalty team, does that mean Australia apparently are?
I’m not saying that the umpires didn’t struggle with the level of the game, the calls against Mes seemed bizarre (haven’t seen the replay to judge properly, but calls against Aussies for stepping and contact were just as bizarre, as well many of the holding (offensive and defensive players alike) calls from the UK umpires were equally bizarre. It wasn’t just the Singaporean umpire who was below par, Stephenson was just as average, the game was super perplexing as a spectator and no doubt difficult for the players to interpret, but the fact that penalties were practically even could indicate there was no bias between teams; there was no ‘scoring end’ as is often said
But wait – NZ are not a 60 penalty team according to Noelene, so it must have been biased against them.
I know this opinion will irritate some people but that comment really irked meI went back and watched the calls on Mes again to try and see what the umpire was seeing. You can see her lean back on Bruce while she is holding. So maybe technically correct as a contact, though personally I consider it a soft call.
@All-rounder, I totally understand we’re you’re coming from, and that comment doesn’t sit right with me either. However Noeline isn’t someone to complain very lightly. She clearly took some issue with it.I find it hilarious that whenever the ferns win, and LA complains about the umpiring or something else, the next test match they almost always win. Just…..
As much as I like Mes, she does have a history of contact when holding the front space. Unfortunately once the umpire catches it they will keep looking for it and she, seemingly, doesn’t adjust.
All those changes in the Diamonds 😱 that’s what helped Ferns eat into that lead.
I find it laughable that NZ are complaining about the standard of the umpiring when it was their actions that insisted on neutral umpires in the first place.
