A tough break for defender Phoenix Karaka, who has been ruled out of tonightโs second Constellation Cup Test against the Australian Diamonds with a mild concussion. Gina Crampton comes back into the team of 12 players.

Oh no! That’s a shame, she did a really good job in the first game and would’ve been good for the ferns if they could continue to improve on their combos.
Bugger.
There goes my starting 7.
So Rore or Burger at GD to start?Australiaโs biggest problem is finding someone to partner Watson in the midcourt. Hadley had 3 goal assists in a half and was caught numerous times standing still. Scherian had an impact when she was first came on and definitely did not hesitate on the feed however, Rore did not take long to get on top with Scherian having 5 T/Os in the final quarter. There were several times in the final quarter that there was a space the size of Canada though the central corridor and neither the WA or GA drive through to relieve pressure and ultimately Diamonds turned the ball over. Watson had the most NNP on court. Her work rate was very high but the Diamonds need someone to step up alongside her.
Australiaโs other problem is the refusal to shoot from anywhere but under the post which makes them very predictable. I wouldnโt be surprised to see Tippett and Philip for this reason. Tippett needs space but she can obviously clear the circle which will allow either herself or Philip with her speed to drive the post.
I would like to see Price start at WD. Brazill had the first test and was okay. Letโs see what Price can do.

AnonymousOctober 16, 2019 at 4:28 amPost count: 2What you just said Tully – I have a feeling LA might have wanted to make that particular change (GS Tipp, GA Phillip) instead of Thwaites coming on in Game 1. Potentially she was going to bring Thwaites on but then changed her mind about it at the last second, CBass called time already, but the new change hadn’t been communicated quick enough?. If you watch that specific bit back at 8:25 to go in 3rd, Phillip takes her jacket off, Thwaites is already running out but then turns around once she is on the court, and LA is trying to tell Gretel to go to GS (?). Twas a bit of a doozy watching it happen….
There are no connections in the Aust team. The only time most of these people play together is for Australia. Okay, you might say what’s the difference to other test teams. Well, they’re very inexperienced at it! We’ve lost a lot of experience, so now we’ve got players coming together in the Australian team who don’t play together regularly and they’re also inexperienced. That’s why I would have liked to see Klau & Turner at some stage. You watch, if Turner comes into the team, it will probably be with Bruce!

But that’s what a good coach should be able to sort out. Getting new combos sorted asap.
Aus should win tonight, losing Karaka takes away options at GD, and the height factor, Ferns have very little of that.Couldn’t agree more Ian…I think Lisa Alexander has a great record of combining players with little to no domestic ‘combos’, however Norma and NZ coaches have often favoured established combinations when/if possible. Tricky for Lisa though given vixens are only attack line in the SSN final series with more than 2 attacking players available for diamonds.
I do think that Klau would do well to be eased into play with Turner out the front. Weston seems to have a strong hold on the GD bib, but id try her at GK or on the bench given how many turnovers she’s been making of late. I’m also tempted to see Tippett and Philip run a moving circle. Bassett isn’t close to her top form, and quite seriously the lack of height in the ferns defence end shouldn’t be as competitive as its being allowed to be.
I also think they are missing Simpson and rav a lot more than many people are commenting on – their styles match up extremely well on NZ, even if their SSN form wasn’t remarkable the past couple of years. Simpson, Geitz and layton all brought such mongrel and enthusiam to the diamonds defence end…. the current crop while still impressive just don’t have the same fear factor.
Despite my critique of Aussie, I feel like the ferns have now won by a single goal with Ekanasio play the games of her life with near perfect % – all it will take for the diamonds to seal a 10+ goal win is for Maria or Amelia-Anne to have an ‘off’ shooting day. Just hope its not tonight ๐
True montyb, but with the massive height advantage the Diamonds have, their need to be as close to the post as possible, is their undoing. Gretel can shoot from further away, so I don’t understand why she has to take the big stride forward.
I think Turner is in the 12 so who has dropped out?
Starting lineups:
GS Folau
GA Ekenasio
WA Saunders
C Langman
WD Rore
GD Burger
GK WatsonGS Bassett
GA Tippett
WA Scherian
C Watson
WD Brazill
GD Weston
GK BruceThwaites is the one to drop out of the 13 for Aust.
Did CT do something wrong. Lots of defenders bench sitting for Aus tonight.
Eek not sure I like the composition of the 12.
Scherian gets the start. Rore had her measure last match and in the SSN final so letโs see how today goes.
Canโt say Iโm confident but hopeful …
I CANNOT UNDERSTAND LA. Thwaites came on well in my opinion why would you bench her??? Especially with such a predictable shooting circle??? Thwaites and Phillip could have been an amazing partnership to try tonight because Bassett isn’t in great shape in my opinion, better than her domestic season but still…
