Thunderbirds out of 2020 finals. Hopefully, they can get a few more wins int he next few rounds but if not I hope they test out Hodges and Williams and just in general figure out who they want back for 2021. Surely, Gooden will leave, no court time in weeks
I quite like the male commentator, Tom, I would like to see him commentate SSN more
I was reading someone’s comment on another thread that Parmenter would not be selected in Diamonds squad as only plays WD. I thinks she proved today she is very versatile going into C and WA.
Giants 64-T’birds 54
Austin 30/40 (75%)
Harten 28/37 (76%)Potgieter 41/47 (87%)
Glasgow 5/9 (56%)
Horjus 5/11 (46%)Super shots: Austin 4/8, Horjus 3/9, Harten 2/4
Assists: Nankivell 22
Gains: Sterling 8MVP: Austin
Giants got stronger as the game wore on.
I was so impressed with Parmenter today, so much versatility. She’s obviously not a natural WA but she was safe with the ball and did a decent job. I’d like to see more of her at C!
I really think we won’t see Bassett back at Giants next year. Harten started very poorly and she didn’t come on, by the fourth quarter they were completely in control and they weren’t even tempted to rest Austin or Harten. I almost get the feeling there’s been a falling out of sorts, she’s getting less court time than McDonell and Brandley. I personally prefer the Harten/Austin combination but I think it’s wrong that Bassett is basically not being used at all, it’s really damaging her career. Even in the last game I think she only came on because Maddie Hay was sick and threw up in the change rooms.
Austin was a star and brilliant stuff from Parmenter showing she can play all 3 midcourt positions. Nankivell likewise for Tbirds. They tried hard, but Giants were just a bit too good.
Tbirds were 3/12 from super shot range. Yuck.
Yeah I agree, ample opportunities to use Bassett even a little and it hasn’t happened which I really don’t understand. It’s bad for her game and a bad look for the Giants in my opinion. I hope she moves next season and doesn’t retire or stick around at Giants (which could be worse)
This game really sealed Parmenter as a good option for the Diamonds squad. A midcourt of Watson, Hadley, JLP and Parmenter would be both strong and fast.
Hadley, JLP and Parmenter is too defensive in my opinion. Especially if Weston and Eddy are included who have both shown their WD class. The Diamonds need a real backup WA option, so I think Proud needs to be there instead of one of Hadley or JLP. Parmenter has become more disciplined and I’ve been really impressed by her ability to adapt her style. She can fit into both a shutdown role and a ball-winning role. She reminds me of Brazill last year in how she’s really fleshed out her game.
I’ve always wondered if Giants were leaned on to sign Bassett as it was the most odd signing. I thought the reason she was moving was bonkers given that Wood was happy to stay at Lightning when Taurua became NZ coach. Did she decide to leave and then there was a panic when teams weren’t looking to pick her up? It’s quite a coincidence that this season with no Australia coach in post that Bassett has been on the bench. I’m not normally one for conspiracy theories but this was a move that surprised everyone and made no sense.
Giants hands down have the best defensive midcourters and defensive attackers in the league. Harten, Austin, and Hay almost always take an intercept each every game. Not to mention JLP and Parmenter who have picked up the majority of the team’s intercepts this year. With the pressure that is put on down the court, their in-circle defenders should be picking up wayyyy more ball than what they are. If Giants sign a quality in-circle defenderfor next season I would put them as the team to beat.
I think they knew quite early in the season that Bassett might be coming down. I remember the Giants kept playing Pettitt at GS with Harten at GA and Jo was really struggling to finish the games at the beginning because of match fitness. Fitzgerald kept saying it was because of Harten’s Defence but I was never that convinced. A few people at the time thought they were looking to transition Brice into the GS role but she fell out of favour so for me I wasn’t surprised that they ended up signing a world class GS.
I think the Giants were surprised by how good Austin became and how quickly. She got basically no court time then played that great game in the Preliminary Final and suddenly made the Diamonds squad. She kind of forced herself off the bench and since then it’s been about trying to For her on court in whatever way works for Harten and Price. Unfortunately that has led to the Tour de CBass.
Thank goodness that’s the last of the awful commentating duo. At the end the male commentator (can’t remember name) said oh Jo Harten is going for another super shot we don’t see her normally put up a lot of them??? Was that sarcasm, she’s the top in the league for SS put up 🤦🏻♀️
I really think playing C and then WA in this game has really got to further strengthen Parmenters diamonds hopes.
Also I too think the reason C-Bass is on the bench is because they didn’t expect Austin to improve so quickly. Also Austin is young and she is probably looked at as the future of Giants, another year on the bench could have sent her looking for another club next season, that wouldn’t have been good with both Cbass and Harten in their 30s.
Also I love Nakivell, she should have started at WA with Williams at C. They missed the experience and calmness of Pitman today.Just curious, Anyone else really struggling to enjoy SSN this year?
Super shot is terrible. Worse decision possible.
Maybe it is also the midweek games. Hard to catch up and stay focussed.
Haven’t watched a full game for a few rounds.Only positive for me is the amount of young players actually getting court time. Dwan, Horjus, Nankivell, Aryang for example.
Yeah I agree TS. I don’t like the Supershot. It’s changed the whole game, not just the 5 minutes that it’s in play for.
I’ve also found some teams (Vixens and Swifts) boring to watch. I think it’s just cause they’ve got the same lineups as last few seasons and we are just seeing the same old stuff.
People think the Fever are boring to watch but I’ve loved watching them this year. Fowler has gone to a new level, ATN has improved heaps, I’m also enjoying the fresh face of Emma Cosh – not to mention young star Sunday Aryang who can take some screamer intercepts.
