The “Mi Mi situation” is/was a tricky one. I have always been a huge fan of her and she does a lot off the court and apparently even more so this week. But the truth is that during the second half of the season, the FB have been a far better team with her *off* the court.
So… does she deserve game time this round simply because of her heritage? Bringing her on in the last minute would surely have smacked of tokenism at its most calculated. Bringing her on in the last 5 minutes (or at any time during the game) could well have cost the FB the game, and even though finals are out of their grasp, they *are* on court to win every game if they can.
I can see the arguments for both sides of this “fence”.
Dunkley V Mimi reminds me of the Nevins v Charles choice – sometimes the safer, less ‘flashy’ player balances the firebirds attack better. I always preferred Charles’s game, but you couldn’t argue with how much more settles it used to look with Nevins in attack. Great win!
Jemma Mimi is an outstanding net baller. I hope she has a long career. I hope she continues to develop her skills. However Opportunities in the game should only ever be consistent with a players skill.
I’d like to see Mimi make the commute and join Lightning, I feel like Kylee Byrne would be a great coach for her and playing with Wood and Koenan might just steady her a bit. Aiken and Bueta bring excitement and thus probably need a stable midcourt around them whereas Lightning have thrived on a speedy dynamic midcourt and smart skilled play in the circle.
I’d love to see Mi Mi go to Lightning. It only because I think it’d be great for her netball but it’d definitely boost Lightning. They have one attacking midcourter.
Yep, as it stands their squad is quite unbalanced, her and Scherian could play WA/C either way around with McCaulliffe/Russell filling in at WD. Obviously that’s assuming Langman isn’t there but if she is then she can go WD or C depending what’s needed. With Scherian Russel and Langman all being older you’d expect that Lightning are looking for a few young guns in the midcourt.
Lightning should try and get Mi Mi and Price. Price’s family is based on the Sunshine Coast if I recall correctly so if she’s ever going to leave Fitzgerald it will probably be to go there. Even if Langman and Scherian both return next year, they’re not going to be there longer term. Building a midcourt around Mi Mi, Price and McAuliffe would be great for the club going forward. I think playing in a midcourt surrounded by calm, experienced and consistent players would really improve Mi Mi’s pass selection.
It would be great for diamonds too. I hadn’t even thought of Price moving but her style would probably be good with a speedy WA. I dont know if she’ll leave Giants though, she’s very loyal to Julie F and is great mates with Harten and Manu’a.
Everyone has their Price, pun unintended. If Langman does move on that would surely open up a lot of space in the salary cap, and what with the Queensland border being shut and everything I think being closer to family might be a bigger priority. But yes, the loyalty that Julie Fitzgerald garners is quite astonishing. She seems to be able to bring basically anyone out of retirement, across the Tasman and from any rival club.
I’m quite surprised that Jenke went Cassidy in C and Mi Mi in WA. I’ve always thought that Cassidy is the dominant attacking midcourt of the two, and Mi Mi was probably the more defensive.
Firebirds 64-Vixens 58
Aiken 45/51 (88%)
Dwan 16/23 (70%)Kumwenda 22/24 (92%)
Thwaites 17/18 (95%)
Philip 8/10 (80%)Super shots: Thwaites 7/7, Kumwenda 3/5, Dwan 3/6, Philip 1/2
Assists: Cassidy 20
Gains: Jenner 6MVP: Jenner
Good win for Firebirds.
I think Jemma Mi Mi not getting a run is disgraceful. The Firebirds had the perfect opportunity to honour the only indigenous player in the league and blew it, despite having the game in the bag. Would it have killed Dunkley to come off?? Cassidy also could have given Mi Mi her bib.
It’s an interesting debate. It is the indigenous round and she is the ONLY indigenous player currently in the SSN so it is odd but also the team has to put their needs first right? Would we feel differently about Mimi getting on the court if the SSN had many indigenous Australians across the teams?
In this particular situation, I can understand the point of view that people hold in saying that Mimi is the only Indigenous player and this is the Indigenous round and she has gotten a lot of attention but doesn’t get the chance to even get on the court. But also, Firebirds aren’t going to finals, that’s not to say that they shouldn’t try to win their remaining games, but would it have really hurt to put Mimi on for a quarter?
This stat sums up how good Watson is.
Goal Assists YTD:
Watson: 287
Charles: 246Despite not playing the last two games Watson is still well clear of the next best on the goal assists stats for the season to date.
Also still has the most NNP (even though I think they are rubbish) if any WA in the comp. Is equal 5th for CPR for the comp.
No one can replace that individually (okay maybe an in form Proud or Kelsey Browne??) but it takes a collective team effort. Take any of the Firebirds attackers from yesterday, they were great but put one of them in WA for Vixens and Vixens would have still lost.
Huge shoes.
Add on the fact that Charles’ goal assists are IMHO much easier than Watson’s 😬😬
Watson really is incredible! Loved her talking about how Honey was faster than her but needed to be more demanding. Made me realise how Liz’s mindset really makes her a phenomenal player, she doesn’t back down and takes some fierce drives
