What a shambles. Are those two umpires new at this level? Both decisions to exclude Manu’a seemed over-reactions to what actually transpired on court.
But…… The Giants took many bad decisions during that last 5 minutes. they had the opportunity to win the game a couple of times. e.g. choosing a “risky” 2 goal shot instead of a more sure one goal shot when they had the following centre pass also.

So what happened to the Rule of caution – warning – suspension …they’re saying she got a warning in the second quarter….so that’s Option 1 sanction. What a shambles, on top Of the confusion around Rules vis the two point Shot.
Wonder if Fitzgerald was aware of the situation and rules? If so was a risky decision to leave Manu’a on and run the risk of her being sent off. Sure they didn’t have Brandley but McDonnell has had some court time this year already.
I am no expert (far from it) but I think the umpires have the option, at their discretion, to go straight to suspending a player at any stage of that process of “caution, warn, suspend”.
Perhaps this discretion should be taken away from them.

That was tough for Giants. I really wanted them to win as I felt like it was a hard call on Manu’a (gotta feel for her). Yes the Giants can be messy and physical but I thought the second send-off wasn’t necessary as it was eyes on the ball and attempting a deflection or intercept. First one was a bit iffy and probably looked worse than it actually was but it wasn’t an AFL “hip and shoulder” and probably could have been managed better with another warning (is that in the rule book to get another warning?) or call to “tidy up”. I thought Harten did well in the huddle to try and keep the team calm and her post-match interview was very professional.
That was a complete and utter shambles. I thought it was a complete over reaction by the umpires and have seen a lot worse challenges.
I thought Harten kept it together really well at the end.By the way, this has happened before. Not in this comp, but in the UK Superleague this year. Latanya Wilson of Celtic Dragons was sent from the court for 2 mins, then her coach put her back on, it happened again and she was sent off again. Dragons played the last Q with just 6.
So the golden rule from this point on… If one of your players is sent from the court for 2 minutes, when the 2 minutes is up, keep them on the bench and put someone else on. Otherwise you run a very real risk of being left a player short.
In the 2nd Q Manua was late on the challenge at the post and this was deemed deliberate. As Caribou says the 2020 rule change makes this a warning – it could have been escalated to a suspension or send off if deemed deliberate.
When she was late again in the 3rd Q and took out Können’s legs It was again dangerous and the umpire had no choice but to suspend.
Late again in the 4Q nearly taking Scherian’s head off was also dangerous, so no option b7t to send off.
Julie shouldn’t have put her back on & then asked her to contest – asking for the inevitable!
It looked like “the umpires gave you that win” because Cara looked shocked…
By the way – I thought this was actually one of the better umpired games this season – & Congratulations (or should that be Commiserations 😉) to Nathan Begley on his SSN devut. I thought he had a good game!
Well done to Harten and Langman on their measured speeches. Evidently Poolman was in tears at the end of the game; not surprised. The commentators admitted they missed Manua’s second quarter warning….what has happened to the caution?
And Bassett not on court for a large part of the game. That’d be the talking point of the game if not for the umpires.
Interesting game Fitzgerald didn’t know the rule, especially if it has happened before and recently. But even the commentators didn’t think the second and third instances were deliberate or that bad, and they admit they missed the first instance in the second quarter.
NZ hasn’t adopted that rule…what is it at international level?
I have to disagree with the commentators on this one. The umpires are responsible for controlling the game. It’s a condensed season, and players need to recover quickly for the next round. If the umpires are seeing unsuccessful contests that are causing bodies to fly, or where players need to take evasive action to avoid injury, the umpires have an obligation to protect the players on court. They issue warnings and sendoffs to encourage players to reflect and adjust.
I think Laura Langman’s post-match comment was significant: “We don’t like putting the umpires in that position.“
Because the challenge was dangerous not a caution, straight to a warning, then the automatic progression to suspension and send off.
How can SSN Players & coaches not know the rules?
The 2020 rule changes took out the need for the umpire to decide whether or not the action was deliberate, only if it was dangerous before warning etc
