You rarely see this, but Watson is being outplayed now, really not effective and making errors. But that’s probably symptomatic of the whole frontline struggling. Phillip 4/4 and Thwaites only 2/2 after 10 mins, while Austin 6/6 and Harten 4/5. Austin is playing beautifully – another supershot lands and their lead is 4.

Also note Brandley on for her 3-4 mins leading into half time.

Giants playing very well here, putting the Vixens under pressure. No easy passes. Great game.

Vixens need to change their defensive circle as well. I love Mannix but she isn’t in the game. Maybe try Weston and Eddy together to shut down Harten’s
          Drive. Harten would school Dehaney.

I think they need Kumwenda at GA for a Quarter. It’s definitely not her best position but she’s played there a bit with the Tactix. Philip is the main reason they’re behind, she needs some time to reflect on the bench and maybe she can come back on with some impact.

Austin really outplaying Weston, one of her best games! Really standing up. I think Eddy and Weston need to switch, or maybe shift the midcourt back and put Honey on at WA. Wouldn’t mind seeing Weston at GK on Harten as well, it’s not like she’s holding or there’s a large height difference.

Half time. Giants lead 31-26 over Vixens.

It’s really working to start Harten/Austin. Austin shot 8/8 in that quarter, including 2 supershots. She also has lost zero possession (turnovers, or throwing intercepted passes).

Vixens are 2/8 for the 2-pointers. Usually they hit 60% at this range, so that would normally have been 5/8, and the score line would’ve been 32-31 with Melbourne in the lead.

Kate Moloney dropped off in Q2, 4 feeds and only 1 goal assist, compared to 8 feeds and 5 goal assists in Q1 (NB she hasn’t given away possession at all). But that’s because the Vixens frontline timing is messed up and Thwaites can’t present to front so easily and regularly.

I’m really impressed on how well these young ones interview. Very well spoken. I’m sure they do some media practise within their clubs, but still impressive.

Tully, that’s a really good idea! Weston GK and Eddy GD. Could also do a midcourt of Honey/Watson/Moloney. But if you could just fix Phillip, they would be in a much better spot. I wouldn’t use Kumwenda, I’d use a “real” GA from the youngsters.

They don’t have a GA though, the Vixens only have the 3 contracted shooters in the 12.

                      1/2 time: Giants 31-26

                      Thwaites 16/16 (100%) 0/3 (0%)
                      Philip 6/7 (86%) 2/5 (40%)

                      Harten 10/12 (83%) 1/3 (33%)
                      Austin 11/11 (100%) 4/4 (100%)

Is this the match where Kiera Austin really comes of age? She’s been a fringe player with potential till now but this is special. So far

Moloney dropped off because Parmenter was far tighter on Watson. Moloney is strong in attack when Watson is creating. When Watson is not 100% dominant then Moloney does not step up and create. That’s what has happened again and is why Moloney struggles to make Diamonds teams. Also with Philip being outplayed Watson is having to take a lot more CPR than usual which takes her off the second phase where she is normally dominant.

I’d try a midcourt of Moloney – Watson – Honey. Honey plays very different to Watson and draws defenders and relies on great speed and footwork. Honey focuses on getting out for the CPR which would allow Watson the second phase. I’d leave Eddy on and play her at GD with Weston at GK. Harten is burning Mannix at times.

I don’t want to see Kumwenda at GA. Her vision and pass are not strong enough. I’d expect turnovers a plenty. If they change GA then Thwaites needs to move out and have Kumwenda at GS.

If I’m Giants I do absolutely nothing. Poolman and Hay are a little down but they aren’t a problem.

She should have been playing in GA last year too!

The Vixens have a young GA in Brisbane in Sacha McDonald. But she hasn’t been in the 12 since round 1.

And yep as expected Vixens just go to a Kumwenda and Thwaites circle. So predictable.

Thwaites really opened up the space at GA, if she has the lungs they should leave her out there. The Giants defenders starting to get costly with penalties and not getting so many gains.

Austin absolutely killing it!! If they win surely she’s MVP.

In the last 5 minutes, we saw NINE super shots and two regular goals. And not a single miss.
