I also think the Thunderbirds have gotten som very poor obstruction calls today, in general sometimes I get the feeling that umpires call obstruction too much when it is not necessarily true.
Thunderbirds get the chance to equalize but can’t convert
Thunderbirds really Gad a chance to take this game and they just couldn’t not convert in attack, so disappointed but a good fight back
Why do these commentators stuff up who has the CP so regularly. Understanding the run of the play should be a fundamental part of their role. Why did Gaudion and Ellis think the next CP was Thunderbirds?
I agree with the umpire about the Nankivell taken call. She had clearly taken it then panicked. Although she should have just passed to Sterling. Pressure does crazy things.
Did think in the 4th Q it looked inevitable Tbirds would win. And it really did. All the flow that had been in the Firebirds lineup in the first half had gone completely. It seemed just a formality for the Tbirds. But after leading 53-51, they didn’t score at all in the last 3min!
Seriously, that was bizarre. I don’t know how Firebirds won that. But they did. Thunderbirds had a stack of chances in those last few minutes and just couldn’t take them.
And that leaving the ball on the floor trick… wow!!!
To demonstrate how Firebirds were just grimly holding on in this game, their quarter by quarter scores were 20, 14, 12, 8. It was just pure guts and a bit of luck in that last quarter that got them home.
It’s far too early for Dwan or Horjus to be in the Diamonds squad? Would like them to both get another SSN season under their belts.
Yes it’s far too early. You o my need to look at Nankivell’s brain snap to see what the combination of Inexperience and pressure does.
Firebirds 54-Thunderbirds 53
Aiken 40/44 (91%)
Dwan 12/16 (75%)Horjus 23/30 (77%)
Glasgow 21/26 (81%)
Potgieter 5/6 (83%)Super shots: Horjus 4/8, Dwan 2/5, Glasgow 0/1
Assists: Cassidy 21
Gains: Sterling 6MVP: Hinchliffe
Firebirds win. Incredible finish!
Tully, I still have nightmares about Sue at the Comm Games at the end when she thought Australia had the next CP and of course it was England and they won.
It’s crazy. If we can sit at home and know why can’t the paid experts get it right?
I was really impressed by Dwan, Nankivell and Horjus on the whole today, but as others have said their inexperience definitely can show at times. I’d like to see all 3 named in that Australia A/Development Team that they introduced again at the end of last year. Definitely stars of the future and hopefully they keep receiving good court time.
Aiken had an outstanding game today, I think she’s the first holding shooter who really beat Sterling in the air. Great positioning and timing. The Defenders were also really strong from the Firebirds and capitalised well on the T’Birds early errors. It was enough in the end.
I don’t know how I feel about Glasgow. She shoots and moves well and is an excellent rebounder but she always seems a bit awkward and hard to find. It’s almost like she’s confused whether she should be playing like a GA or a GS. She doesn’t really hold space but at the same time her timing on the short drives and dodges isn’t really there in the way that it is for Garbin and Koenen. All the injuries haven’t helped of course, hopefully she can keep improving going forward both at GS and GA.
