Jenner can be too ill-disciplined and the hand waving in front of a shooter shooting is behavior that (1) Jenke should stop and (2) umpires should penalise. But not sure who else – Moore? 4 starting GDs are internationals.
But I do think Mannix is ahead of Klau this year so far.
Depends on how Turner goes for the second half of the season. If she plays well and builds then she will be there.
Otherwise I would select Weston, Bruce, Mannix and Klau. Bruce can play GD. Marinkovich plays her there so she won’t be afraid to put Bruce there for Diamonds. If Turner regains her best form then I would sub her in for Klau.
Jenner is too ill disciplined. Yes she has improved but has a way to go. She will be in the squad though.
I would consider Eddy. When she switches to GD for Vixens she always comes alive. Depending on how the remainder of the season goes I might win her in for Klau in that quartet.
For a lot of these girls it will come down to Finals. Moloney and Mannix looked like making the Diamonds last year but they didn’t rise to the occasion in the high pressure games. Turner and Klau both had great Preliminary Final and Final games, which really sewed up their spots for them. If Vixens win the title (especially if they win it with the conviction they’re playing with right now), half their teams will probably be in the 12.
I hope COVID has made Thwaites reconsider her decision. Starting Diamonds GS for me without doubt. Playing some GA has made her even better in my opinion.
I can appreciate that Weston, Mannix, Bruce, Klau are the most experienced at international level, but my main concern is that its a very tall defence end, that strugles against smaller shooters. And at the moment, England and New Zealand both have rotating circles…
Maybe Thwaites is having an amazing season because she’s not in the Diamonds squad anymore? Why would she want to go back? Besides, asking her to come back isn’t going to resolve the lack of shooting experience at international level.
Thwaites is having an amazing season but that doesn’t mean it would transfer to a solid international performance. She probably feels a lot less pressure this year to perform at GS and is enjoying her run out at GA. In terms of defenders I do feel that Mannix has had a great season and probably deserves the call up, however I’d like to see her out at GD more since most of the Diamonds defenders are flexible across both positions such as Bruce & Klau.
I also really rate Kate Eddy in GD and she has played with Klau for two seasons at Swifts so could be a great shout to get her some experience now ahead of Comm Games selections etc.I wouldn’t select Jenner for Diamonds unless she can really get a hold of the penalties. It’s important to remember that Australian umpires are the MOST lenient when it comes to being on the body. It’s great that she can get ball but if she’s on 10+ contacts in SSN that’s probably 15-20 on some Kiwi umpires. When England and New Zealand have shooters who can really shoot from anywhere it’s too costly to have a GD on court giving away penalties in the circle.
Klau has a much better game last night. It’s unsurprising what having Turner and Hadley ahead of her can do. I said a few weeks ago that I suspected Hadley would spend a lot of time in WD and Klau was missing Turner. Yes Moore was getting intercepts but she doesn’t do the shut down inglorious work that great GDs like Turner and Weston do.
I agree al_ex I would have Jenner in the squad for experience. Also she would be from different coaching. But not in the final team; Jenner is the same as Parmenter. If you aren’t in play you can’t win the ball.
Between Weston, Mannix, Eddy, Klau, Turner and Bruce the Diamonds have plenty of options.

Eddy and Weston also really impress me with their WD abilities. NZL have shown how important it is to have circle defenders who can play WD, and with Weston and Eddy in the 12 it provides important WD backup which we really lacked at the WC.
Eddy would be good for short snappy GAs as well though Weston v Horjus showed she can adjust her game too
Realistically if Thwaites did come out of retirement – for how long exactly? Would she be able to go another 4yrs?
Diamonds are probably better off, starting from scratch, and get right into the rebuilding stage.
CBass is still available, and IMO still very service-able. Should be starting GS for Giants, and would still be my starting GS for Diamonds too.
If Thwaites isn’t going to be around in 2022/2023, is Bassett going to be? She’s definitely not playing like someone who’s gunning for another cycle. Sure she should be getting more court time than she has been, but she has only really had one good game the entire season and she’s played every except one. She didn’t step up in either of the two one goal final losses for Australia, I don’t see why the Diamonds should persevere with her and not Thwaites (if Thwaites were open to returning that is).
