NS EXCLUSIVE: Origin Australian Diamonds and Development Squads announced

The strong form of a number of young athletes in the Suncorp Super Netball League has seen them rewarded with inclusion in the Origin Australian Diamonds and Development squads for 2021/2022.

21 athletes were named by selectors Stacey Marinkovich, Annie Sargeant and Michelle Wilkins in the Diamonds’ squad. The selectors, aided by Development Squad Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald, also chose a further 19 athletes to make up the Development Squad, with the view to growing the depth of talent within Australian pathways.

After a stellar season, 20 year old Sunday Aryang (West Coast Fever) and 24 year old Amy Parmenter (GIANTS Netball) have made their first senior national squad, while Ash Brazill (Collingwood Magpies) and Maddy Turner (NSW Swifts) have both been reselected after last year’s omission.

Aussies in SSN who aren’t in either squad includes Scherian, Mcauliffe, Rav, Simpson, Fraser, Poolman, Brandley, Sinclair, Browne, Jovic, Stanton/Barkmeyer, Petty

To be fair there’s not many from that group that I would say are hard done by. Obviously Browne/Rav is just silly but I’m hoping they didn’t make themselves available.

Mcaullife/Fraser probably most hurt by lack of consistent court time.

and yet Olivia Lewis who has had less court time than the 2 combined got in…

I wouldn’t have had Rav in my squad. Defensively I don’t think she’s great, and she gives away a lot of penalties (highest in league for C’s). Romelda gives her a good target so her feeds have been good, but it’s a different game feeding Koenen/Garbin and I haven’t seen enough of her hitting the circle edge to prove she can do that. Same could be said about Verity Charles.

I really like the inclusion of Aryang and Parmenter. Both well deserved.

Not sure we can compare Lewis with Fraser/Mcaullife as they don’t play the same positions it’s like comparing Bruce and Browne… not saying Lewis has shown heaps but you’d have to pick another defender to drop her and the only one available is poolman who is definitely not strong enough.

Agree with what you’re saying Waylay however as mentioned Charles is basically the same except she has an even easier person to feed being Fowler. I think her court time with diamonds last con cup exposed that she isn’t effective without a giant GS. Rav at least had a bit of time feeding a Bueta/Dwan circle on occasions.

The idea behind the Development squad is players who have great potential but are not able to get on court for their SSN teams/are on the cusp of making the Diamonds squad/have made the squad but not had a lot of exposure there. It is to simulate the squad experience so if they are thrown in there, they have some experience. It was an idea that came about when they lifted the import cap at the introduction of the SSN.

Players like Mcauliffe and Scherian just mustn’t be on their radar. Simpson is too experienced to take a spot in that development squad, and at her level of experience she should be making the actual squad or nothing.

I’m really keen to know more about Browne not being there, I feel Charles is there for her speed but they could get that from Browne. Perhaps they are wanting more C coverage with Watson being out.

I think the development squad is too big. Are all these players realistically future Diamonds?

I don’t understand Lewis’ selection. There are more defenders in the squad than any other area of the court so it wasn’t a shortfall of defenders that got her over the line. On SSN form I’d take Newton over Lewis.

How Fraser and Jovic aren’t in there over say MiMi and Dunkley I have no idea. I know which two I see as offering more for the future.

I would have liked to have seen Wallam and Samason in the squad. ATN is a beautiful
Play maker but in the Diamonds she won’t be feeding Fowler and as such any GA for the Diamonds needs to hold down their shooting.

Yes I think Jovic is notable absence too.

How did they not pick Kelsey Browne after the season she has had.

I think something that may hurt is not having a specialist WA ready to go. Watson is still out, everyone else is a C/WA swing player. Browne was the obvious choice.

One of the things I feel that exposed us last con cup was having players who were playing a different position for diamonds than the one they played SSN all season… Price played C for giants but WD for aus, Watson was a specialist WA playing C and even Charles played her whole season at C and then came on in WA…… the ferns have specialists in almost every position and we need to be able to match that.

@Tully, I agree the development squad is way too big.

@NB12, I hear what you say about the idea behind the development squad, but you can’t have that many players on the “cusp” of making the Diamonds.

IMHO the selectors may have set the bar too low for making the development squad. As already said on the Forum, what about Wallam   she has already proved herself against Bruce and in the VSNL. What more does she need to do??

Seen on Twitter Megan Anderson responding to a question asked “who else is injured” in the Fbirds camp. She did say Gab Simpson, achilles.
I wonder if that’s part of the reason why she wasn’t being included in the squad? Or was her form down?

To be frank, I think Simpson’s form is the reason she wasn’t selected. This last season or two haven’t been that great for her in my opinion.

I also agree with the comments about having specialist players for each position. It concerns me that we have players like JLP playing C for Giants but then expecting her to be amazing at WD for Australia. To some extent, flexibility between positions is important but I think that avoiding lots of positional changes is important at Diamonds level. To say I’m concerned about the future of Australian netball would be a lie, but I am concerned about the future success of Diamonds.
