Thanks to Mr Sydney Covid and his jolly time he had in Wellington, the Pulse v Tactix game is now delayed until Tuesday 29th
McLeod, agreed! However what I find incredible is that he left his hotel and went to the airport, then flew while symptomatic. Bondi Junction has been an area of interest for days and he worked there, in a health setting and surely knew the drill.
With respect to CBass, I think many shooters would struggle at Magic at the moment. They often turn the ball over before it gets near the circle, or have such a difficult approach that by the time they are in a position to deliver the ball to the circle there is so much pressure. Their starts certainly don’t help things.
CBass definitely isn’t performing at her best, but as others have pointed out some of the feeds are pretty awful and then when she is on, they often don’t let the ball go. Then she will often come off the hold a bit too early, it just seems like it hasn’t clicked.
If CBass can be fully fit and healthy again I think she has more to give, before she had that forearm injury she was playing great netball and had added a lot to her game.
In Con Cup I think she wasn’t given much opportunity outside of the first match and had limited court time in SSN that year. She was brought on so late in the subsequent games and I can’t imagine that strange captaincy stuff did anything to add to her confidence.
Magic have also been quite unfortunate to have Kara in and out with injury so probably not able to settle as a combo in match play so well.
Like others here, I am not sold on Metcalfe – for whatever reason is hasn’t seemed to be working at Magic for a few years and you start to wonder about the coach. Then again Helene Wilson looks like she is finally having a good year – so what do I know! They had a good team last year, but was lacking that strong GS.
I was really surprised they didn’t keep ALM, as I thought she would have gelled well with CBass and Grace Kara.Yeah I think Metcalfe can improve but needs more time – recruitment and injury has been their biggest issues this year. I also think Parata cops too much flack on here – losing three starting players plus two quality benchies means this season was also going to be tough ask.
Great coaches are hard to find – I think Bloxham and Wills are the best coaches in the league by far.
Parata needs to be given a chance, and another year of working with Taurua – who I believe is working on the coaches development (correct me if I am wrong). As museboy said Pulse lost a number of top quality players and losing Ekanasio right at the start of the season just added to it. Like wise Magic has had quite a squad change (Steel also) but Magic’s recruitment may need looking at. 3 GK and no specialist GD isn’t helping the team and while Mikaeres arms are all over the place she is not the fastest. If Semple was fully fit, and Faka imo the results would be quite different.
I also meant to add – Mystics squad is more stable this year and that is assisting them as well as the fact that they have implemented fitness standards that must be met in order for the players to start on court. Wilson has taken a while to come into her own but we need to remember that she has not played herself at top level. I thought Wright may have been too confusing in his explanations for the team squad but it appears not and I haven’t seen any bibs in the air this season either – the starting 7 have been consistent bar injury and managed time and have mostly remained on court for the full game, being left to work through their own lapses.
and for future news – Kayla Johnson (Cullen) and husband will be returning to NZ. He has signed back with the Warriors. Maybe Harrisons replacement for next season?
On Storm Purvis’ Instagram story Kayla Johnson is at the Stars training so it’s a real possibility to see her back there next year
Latu-M returned to Australia I believe. Kelsey McPhee the GS from last year, best left un said about that.
I knew as soon as Tem left the Tactix, it would end up badly.TB – I’d love the answers to your questions too.
Latu Meafou is played for Tigers in the 2021 Hart Sapphire Series which I believe was in Queensland. I think it has now finished for this season.
Fakahokotau – I know she was still working on her ACL recovery earlier this year but I suspect returning to live in or near Auckland has not been helpful to her. Moving well away from home and family responsibilities was the best thing she could have done to grow her career. However with Covid and travel restrictions it is hard on anyone to not be near family.
Semple – With Covid causing her return to NZ she went looking to join a franchise and I think she was quite surprised. She did do preseason and there is an article that says Semple has noticed a definite step up in intensity in New Zealand.
“It’s a way bigger step up over here, even the pre-season I just went through was way harder, it’s the hardest I’ve ever been through. I think it’s a bigger step up because there’s not just a starting seven in every team, everyone’s fighting for a spot, it can change any week. And it’s more physical as well definitely.”
