Just looking at the ANZP shooting stats on their website. Of the Ferns-available GAs, the following feature in the Top 10 for accuracy.
Amaru-Tibble (84%) 122 from 146
Williams (84%) 108 from 128
Hume (76%) 112 from 147
Metuarau (75%) 79 from 105Also,
Selby-Rickit (69%) 72 from 104
Mes (63%) 41 from 65Now totally aware shooting isn’t everything. But Metuarau is also third (Mes fourth) for CPR, and Metuarau is the only shooter to feature in the Top 10 for feeds.
So in my mind, the Ferns shooting circle looks something like:
1. Wilson as starting GS.
2. It’s a fitness race between Nweke, Bird and Dunn for that second GS spot.
Nweke has been in the side most recently so I would say has the inside running there.
3. I don’t think either Mes or TPSR, are *currently*, starting Ferns GA options. I actually think whoever Taurua picks would need to job-share GA because 30 mins against a Diamonds defence would probably run them ragged. If I were picking a team today I’d go with Hume and Metuarau with Williams a training partner.Thoughts?
WeWood – Humes erratic shooting over the years gone by has been her biggest downfall and I am so impressed with her play this season that I do believe she has a definite chance at making the SF. Metuarau is a hard one – her shooting stats aren’t that much higher than the incumbents – Mes and TPSR so is her contribution elsewhere on court that much better? Te Paea missed the start of season so her centre pass receives are naturally down.
I think Williams has a great future so will be looked at.Wilson will be starting GS – I do hope that she regains her form. She has had an awful lot to deal with personally over the last year and that, along with the pressure of Captain of the Stars, will not be helping her shooting stats. I don’t like shooters being captains for this very reason.
Agree Maryann, Maia and a few of the Ferns have had to deal with a lot in their lives.
They are certainly in the right place with Dame Noels, looking after things.Nawai is also a shooter as well. Started as a shooter and played GS/GA throughout her high school. Her shooting was what gave her the scholarship to NZ when she was a high school student in Fiji. She even played GA/GS when she made her debut during the Silver Ferns tour of Fiji. She switched to defence when she got elevated to the Canterbury Beko team.
If Pulse ever did run out of Shooters (even Rowland wouldn’t stand a chance), they could put Jury to GK, Mason to GD and then take Nawai to GS with Dunn at GA
Maryann I would be interested to see how Metuarau stands up to a Taurua fitness test.
However a comment made on here a couple weeks ago that I think is strongly in Tiana’s favour is her ability to form a great partnership with her partner – think Tuivaiti, Dunn and now Fisher.
Her touch on the feed into Fisher reminds me of Ekenasio into Wilson in the Con Cup. Maia was on top in that series (I will preface there wasn’t neutral umpires 🥴), however I think Tiana’s play outside the circle is a great foil to Maia’s ability to be dominant 1-on-1.
If Nweke gets the nod as the second shooter I also imagine her and Metuarau would have experience together as what would have been the first choice U21 shooting pair??
Falkner will still be in the mix with the Ferns. No doubt DNT, will be happy that the Stars are being cautious with her, and allowing her to fully recover before taking the court again.
Does anyone know exactly what Falkner’s injury is, she’s been out for quite a few weeks now and hopefully she’s back soon
I heard it was knee, the same one she injured (don’t quote me on that).
Magic’s lineup now has Semple starting at GA. Metcalfe changing that position for the third week straight now 🤷♂️
Starting lineups:
I prefer Fowler and Mikaere in the D circle.
The TV clock hit 0 way before the umpire blew the whistle!! I hope the players at the game weren’t going off the Sky clock, it would be very unfair on Magic.
Really impressed with Holly Fowler, I thought she wouldn’t play at all this anz, but she has come back really well.
Play to the umpire, not the clock. There were some stoppages in the final Q, so sky clock means nothing. -
