Hopefully Grace gets the start this time. She needs the exposure now… I can’t at people saying she’s not ready… y’all go in circles saying that everytime a player has an off game. If not now when?? She’s had 3 seasons of domestics under her belt, was the best shooter this season- she’s earned her spot- now she needs to translate that to internationals. Give her the time out there, and she can only grow against a player like Geva. Heffernan and Poi I’d like to see out there. Kerstens has had her chances and has proven null.
The player the Ferns miss the most is Jane Watson, Sulu struggled against Fisher in the ANZ, and last night was worse.
I do think it could have been a different story, if Sulu (or Jury) had Burger at GD for the entire game.
Burger will feature prominently on Friday.
Big ups to TPSR last night. She hasn’t played many international minutes over the last couple of years but held her own. Currently as things stand I think NT will go with a moving circle for Comm games. The Cadbury could change things.
What a happy headache the England shooters options will be for Thirlby.
@Baller- Agreed. I still rate Kate Burley and I still don’t why DNT doesn’t seem interested in her. We are missing a viable option behind Burger at GD. She was the next best behind Karin in ANZ. Jury too slow for that position.I really don’t understand the whole 3 defender thing it’s driving me nuts.
Looking forward GK there should be healthy competition. Watson will be back, if Manu’a impresses she’ll be in contention, Karaka, and a fit Faka. There’s stocks there so I guess Noels is waiting…
Yep – think of the players this team was missing, Watson, Crampton, Ekenasio, Watson, Rore, Karaka, Mes with MSB and Kayla Johnson waiting in the wings.
Note NONE of the 12 game day quad yesterday featured in the World Cup grand final, which was only two years ago. This is a very experimental squad.
However, the margin and manner of the loss is concerning. The psychological implications for the English are huge, which the Ferns would want to nip in the bud…
I haven’t seem the game but Nweke is so young and needs more time. What a baptism of fire to come up against Geva for your debut! However if the Ferns can ease her into games, then hopefully she will be up to speed come CWG/NWC time. Toeava OTOH – would rather have Poi in there.
Oops – had Watson in there twice! But if Fakahokotau gets her fitness levels back, she could be in the mix as well.
This was a game of two halves, with New Zealand stronger in the first half, and then England winning a dominant second half by 13 goals. However it felt very classic Dame Noeline – go steady in game one, expose players in game two, and then put the foot down in game three.
Top paragraph – Yes Tasmin Greenway nailed it!
Agree with Tamsin! DNT is such a tactical master, i have faith in her selections, although, i really wanted to see Heffernan get a run with Saunders at WA, even if it was only the last 5 minutes of the game, just to get the first game jitters out of the way, and to see how she can connect with the ferns shooters and muscle up against Jade Clarke who was so influential. Kate’s height would be quite hard for the shorter middies to play against but obviously she is not at international level yet, so she needs time to develop. May be DNT is thinking she will be a player for the next 4 year cycle as the ferns are currently spoilt for choice in the midcourt.
Also, i’m glad Peta and Grace played, albeit, a forgettable performance this time. But they will only get better from here.
These international series are about player development. You might think it’s better to seal the deal by winning the first two games, then using the third game to blood the newbies and experiment with combos, but a dead rubber third game also allows England to do the same and experiment against the kiwis. But now that the series is still in contention, Thirlby is less likely to make many changes or experiment with new combinations, limiting their opportunities for developing their squad. DNT is very clever!!
My prediction for Friday’s starting seven assuming Crampton is still out:
GS Wilson
GA Metuarau
WA Saunders
C Winders
WD Gordon
GD Burger
GK FitzpatrickIf Crampton is back, probably Gordon will go to the bench with Saunders and Winders pushed back one position, and Jury might play in place of Fitzpatrick as they’ll have their Captain back. I think Sulu wasn’t very effective against Fisher but they’ll need her on-court leadership if Gina is still out.
I just want players in their correct position. Sulu isn’t the answer at GK, Jury while nothing amazing is a better option.
Winders at WD, I guess Kersten will be at C as there is no other option, unless you know!!!!!, but that won’t happen sadly.
Maia must play GS.📰 A spot of evening reading as England's Vitality Roses seek to win the series against New Zealand after triumphing in the second Test.
