Thanks Maryann, I had the same question about being able to watch the NZ – Roses games here in lockdown capital of the world Melbourne, Australia.
Off topic but hoping someone will see this post or the similar one I put in International just minutes ago. Last evening using ‘netball news’ as a search I found two articles from yesterday both implying the Roses vs Australia and also the Constellation Cup was in doubt. If someone can find them would you please post them, last evening I couldn’t post at all on here, let alone a link!
Heres a newshub article from today
Crampton must also be in Auckland stillNETBALL
Constellation Cup: Trans-Tasman series increasingly doubtful, as Silver Ferns consider alternativesLifting the Constellation Cup was a long time coming for the Silver Ferns and defending it will now likely be a while away yet.
“As we go on and obviously what’s happening in both countries, it’s getting slimmer in regards to Constellation Cup happening,” admits NZ netball coach Dame Noeline Taurua.
Next month’s four-test series is scheduled to be split between the two countries, but COVID-19 quarantine requirements on both sides of the Tasman are conspiring to ruin that and cancelling the series will create a problem for Dame Noeline.
“Next year is a big year, not only for us, but for other countries with Commonwealth Games, so we’ve got to be smart about what we can do now to fill the gaps,” she says.
‘As it stands, the Silver Ferns have just the one test series – against England this month – locked in, as long as there’s no return to Alert Level 3 or higher. That starts on September 20 at Christchurch.
But there’s another issue brewing – four players, including their new captain, are currently stuck in Auckland under Alert Level 4.
“They’ve applied for exemptions, and we’re waiting to see whether they’re going to be approved or not,” says Dame Noeline. “Time will tell what that looks like for us and what our plans are moving forward.”
But time is something they don’t have.’
“I’m very hopeful, but also, in the scheme of things, I understand that things happen for a reason,” says vice-captain Sulu Fiztpatrick. “We’re just making sure that we’re doing everything we can ourselves to be ready.”
Test matches are key to building combinations and Taurua is a realist.
“We are going to be underprepared, no doubt about that,” she says. “But on the flipside, it’s a great test for us, as it is for England.
“We’re grateful for the international matches out there.”
As for locking in more before July next year…
“We haven’t ruled out anything,” says Dame Noeline. “We can always do with more tests, that’s the priority.”
In these uncertain times, you just don’t know when another opportunity will come up.Does anyone know if the Ferns squad is assembling for training yet without the four Auckland based players? I would hope they have all relocated to Christchurch.
So England have done their 14 days in MIQ, they were set free today. They will have 9 full days to prepare,
yet for some bizarre reason the Ferns have not trained, and 4 players are stuck in Auckland.
Why did those Auck players not get as the same time as England landed in Christchurch.I believe the Ferns had not trained so far because under L4 & L3 non essential travel between the regions was banned. Now the rest of the country outside Auckland is at L2 I did hope that the rest of the squad had assembled and was thinking that camps in Christchurch where the actual games were scheduled were the best bet.
England landed while all NZ was in Level 4. I can’t see the players being allowed out of Auckland unfortunately, noting that the NPC game schedule has been redone which leads me to believe none of the three Auckland teams have been granted an exemption to leave and reassemble south of the Auckland border. I know 4 players vs 3 large squads are quite a difference and international vs regional competition is pretty major but the number of unlinked covid cases and cases still wandering around in the community is creating quite a risk for us all up here.
Would it be possible for the Ferns to play without those 4 players considering lockdown??? And if possible, how would the Ferns line up for England?
Ferns team is named on Stuff, all the Auckland based players are named, they will have 3 days as a team in Christchurch as a team to prepare. England are out of MIQ, they will have 12 days to train before game 1.
England will be far better prepared.
@McLeod – touch wood. Heres hoping 🙂
If the Auckland foursome don’t get down (which from the article McLeod refers to now appears they may) my pick would be
GS Wilson
GA TPSR
WA Saunders
C Kersten
WD Sinclair
GD Burger
GK JuryMetuarau, Heffernan, Burley on the bench
Silver Ferns limited to three days together as a squad before facing England
I’m so pleased the Auckland players have been given dispensation. It is really hard watching sports overseas seeing packed stadiums without masks.
It is going to be an interesting series. Possibly the last internationals before the Comm games. Kinda expecting two team line ups for the SF with as many players as possible getting courttime.
This is gonna be a great series. You could argue that last time these teams met the Ferns were tired (coming off the back of a very hard Cadbury series against the men) and the Roses were a missing some of their first choice squad.
This time the Ferns may be undercooked and the Roses have a stronger squad and a lot more practice time. Did anyone notice Leota at their training session.
Leota is technical coach for the Roses.
