100% agree the Australian attack is just not working. Cbass is available but there is just no confidence to put the ball in.

I feel this really could be Bassett’s last series. Not a target. Not an anchor.
Charles has had a good impact. Mainly through her speed. Not sure it’s a long term solution but should start game 2. neither Hadley or Proud outperformed Moloney in SSN so Moloney deserved another chance. Unfortunately for her she didn’t really take it.I thought Price was the best Australian C in SSN.

Weston has done better than Simpson in WD. Unfortunate as I thought Simpson had a really good SSN and this was her chance to come back. As it stands Simpson and Moloney should drop out for Price and Hadley.

Koenen and Austin have the makings of a good combination. Start them next game. Koenen had a great debut. Tippett and Wood to come back…. Bassett will most likely be edged out. Make Watson captain next game.

I know Bruce has won ball. But she would have done that at GK. Needs to be tighter through court. Longer term I think Klau could be the better GD of the two. As it stands right now she isn’t present in attack. Would like to see Swifts give her a chance to play there this year. If Bruce is going to play GD then the 4th defender may well end up as Mannix for the Comm Games.

Great to see the Aussies keep fighting. Three strong debuts. Lots to build on.

Scruffy final Q from the Ferns attack, thought Ekenasio went missing during the game.
Koenen/Austin combo did well. Ferns can certainly play much better, so can Aus

All 3 debutants were great. Would have preferred to see Charles at C, play Charles and her in their preferred positions.

Aussies will take a lot away from that, although not much time between tests. One of the biggest factors was the style of umpiring – they have the chance for a quick review and adjustment now.

That wasn’t a captains game from Bassett, what’s with the passing out when she is so close to the post. Stacey gave her the opportunity to prove herself and she didn’t.

                  A steady performance from Nz.

Julie Fitzgerald got a lot of flack for not playing CBass last year, and although she probably underplayed her I think the last quarter is kind of proof that opposition have worked her out. Koenen made more of an impact in that quarter than Bassett did the rest of the game, and she took so much more pressure off Austin. Hopefully they start with those two tomorrow. Weston/Bruce/Klau turned over so much ball, they should all start tomorrow too. I’d like to see Hadley start in C tomorrow, there were just so many turnovers through the middle third it was quite embarrassing at times. Bruce or Watson as captain for the next game.

The Ferns were solid but in different areas than I expected. Kirsten and Winders were standouts when I thought they’d be weaknesses. Burger and Watson were strong too. Wilson and Ekenasio were a bit off but I’m sure they’ll be back to their best again soon.

Only watched the second half, but didn’t enjoy the Ferns midcourt burrowing. Going back to habits of old. They got away with it today, unsure if that will work again, again and again. It worked when they played with length.

Would like to see Poi and Gordon but think Taurua will stick with this 12 at least for one more game.

As a Ferns fan, keep Bruce and Weston in GD/WD handling the ball lots! They can be very expensive with their wild passes.

Really enjoyed the debutant trio of Charles, Austin and Koenen. I’d give them a second run tomorrow. I think Koenen could do some real damage on that baseline against the Ferns defenders.

Moloney not up to it in attack imo. Without a zippy playmaker GA, both middies need to be comfortable hitting circle edge, cutting off and reoffering, playing triangles, and both confident on the feed. Watson (in C or WA) needs to be partnered with Proud or Hadley. Charles did ok, but sat back behind NZ zone which lead to a couple of turnovers.

Bruce and Klau is an encouraging combo. Agree that they’re better with Klau in GK as opposed to GD.

Liked Koenen on debut. More time with Austin + Watson and Proud/Hadley in front of them will be an exciting front line.

Must say, CBass’s lack of court time (from last season) really showed in this game.

Diamonds definitely looked rusty, and by the looks of it quarantine took a little toll on them. However in saying that, they only lost by 5. They also had a better shooting accuracy.

NZ played well, but really should have put their foot down. You really can’t give Aussie anything, otherwise they could run away with it.

                              Sam Winders was my MVP!

Must say I don’t really like the Maia/Ekenasio combo. They look slow.
But win they did. Would like to see Mes get a go tomorrow at GA.
