The TBirds wore black arm bands for Ivy-Rose Hughes. I can imagine it would have been quite an emotional night for some of the young girls in the team.

Add in no Potgeiter, Sterling or Van Dermewe and I wouldn’t worry too much about the result. Sure Giants didn’t have Price or Austin but they still had experience of players like Harten and Brandley and a full strength defence.

Today Turner and Wallace didn’t even play, with three Tasmanian girls joining the team. The end score was 83-42. I feel like if the Swifts wanted to develop training partners and academy players they could have just organised to play the Giants, but hopefully the Tasmanian trip has been a good bonding experience for them.

A lot of this season for the Magpies will come down to Nelson. McCollin was really good from the bits I saw and I think she’ll push Allen and Sinclair to the bench. Jovic will only get better and Brazill and Browne are coming back. Newton is more suited to GD than Garrett was. Definitely don’t think they’ll only get one win, especially if Nelson has made the necessary improvements to her handling.

Vixens seem to have forgotten their dresses

                  Forgotten them literally?

Unfortunately didn’t get to watch. For those that did I’d be curious to know how the Vixens youngsters went?

I heard Mannix, Weston and Watson all aren’t playing. Whilst Eddy and MJ won’t play full games. So it’s a good opportunity for the young players to push their chances against a full strength Giants who have already played TBirds.

Gabby Coffey wasn’t originally named as a TP (to my surprise) but has been training with Vixens all year. How did she go?

Just caught up on the Vixens game and I have to say I was impressed with Stanton. She put on a few slightly iffy holds and asked for some balls that she probably shouldn’t have, but was actually overall pretty strong when she was on court. I think with Watson feeding her, who we know wouldn’t feed her if she was not holding a good enough angle, I think Stanton could actually be in for a good season. She was against Brandley and McDonnell so some pretty physical and tough opposition. I also thought Kate Eddy looked incredible when she was on court, mostly at GD. Nice to see Ali Smith in C too, really hoping she will get some court time this year now there’s no need to back up mid-week.

Barkmeyer was also an interesting one because I thought her relationship with Stanton looked much stronger than when she played with MJ.

Kumwenda only arrived (out of hotel quarantine) about 2 weeks ago. Vixens had a lot of problems getting her flights back and MJ ended up spending some time in Johannesburg.

Barkmeyer and MJ have probably only had 3 or 4 sessions together. Same with Stanton and MJ. Whereas Barkmeyer and Stanton have trained since January together so I would expect at this point they would have a stronger connection. Especially without Watson out there to tie them together.

I can see you can still watch the game on YouTube (I had thought you needed to watch live). Hopefully watch some later.

Lightning and Giants play tonight and Giants YouTube will stream it again.
I’m sure I read Vixens were playing Giants at Ken Rosewall Arena at some point so that must be on the weekend.

Lightning and Vixens play Friday and then Lightning play Swifts on Saturday. That was from Lightning website.

Not sure if Swifts and Vixens are playing each other.

Finally watched a bit. What’s scrappy game. I agree with Zara in that Stanton looked quite good. Dropped away as the game went on but didn’t have a lot of support at times. Too many short misses. Seemed to rebound very well (not just off her own shots). MJ and Stanton were the Vixens best combination and should improve with court time and Watson in WA.

Hopefully Vixens don’t have to play Mundy. Looked very slow. Mundy played WA, WA /WD, – and C so got a great run. Honey played – WD / WA, WA, WA. The start of the second quarter with Mundy in WA, Moloney in C and Honey in WD was :negative: they swapped Honey and Mundy and the flow improved a little as Honey had short sharp movement so was an option along with much stronger vision and feeding. Overall the midcourt that quarter was a mudcourt. It was that quarter that MJ and Barkmeyer combined. I think anyone would look ordinary with that ahead of them. It’s times like that Moloney needs to step up in attack but she was nowhere. Price had a field day. Giants had probably their starting 7 on court and ran riot (although hard to know who their best circle defensive combination is).

Dehaney, Eddy and Coffey (second half GD) all won lots of ball. Dehaney had some great intercepts. Coffey had a nice rejection of Austin’s shot at one point.

Dwyer will be a superstar. Will be interesting if she stays at Giants or heads interstate in the next few years. They have a great shooting circle. Good to see Parmenter have another go in WA (second half) but Hay remains the stronger option whilst I would say Parmenter remains the strongest WD (than Manu’a who played the second half there). Giants defence was full strength but similarly to last year they didn’t seem to win a lot of clean intercept ball. Think that’s a key area they need to lift to push back to finals. I’d like to see McDonald get more GK court time this year. Reads the game well from GK whereas seems to get caught out a little at times in GD (where she played this game). Also I think she will win more clean ball for them than Poolman. Hopefully their TPs get more of a chance in the next couple of games. Miller, Sligar and Tombs each got about 5 minutes only.

I think Giants might be able to hold Dwyer, but I think they’ll lose Letherbarrow at some point. I’m not sure if Harten will play much after 2022/2023 and Sophie still has a way to go before she’s a starting player/pushing for Diamonds selection. I think JFitz would love to have Austin, Letherbarrow and Dwyer as the base of the Giants for the next decade but I’m not sure if they’ll be able to find a contract for Matisse before the Swifts do.
