I guess this would’ve actually been Elle McDonald’s first match with the team which is probably why Horjus didn’t get on court. They needed to give McDonald some court time to really see where the attacking combinations are going. I’ll have a look at the replay to see how she went. It’ll be interesting to see how Obst manages the shooter rotations, hopefully if Gooden has improved, there will be less uncertainty about the strength of that shooting end. Personally I’m still backing Horjus until Gooden proves that she is consistent enough.

Horjus didn’t play cause she is sick. Austin took her spot.

Elle McDonald played in the games against Giants awhile back. Around the same time as Conn Cup then had a knee clean out.

I didn’t watch this game but felt that Gooden had improved on last year when I watched her play against Collingwood. Also was strong in game 2 against Vixens.

Williams should have a contract. Over either Petty or McDonald. TBirds need to be very careful not to lose her.

I think Magpies could surprise a lot of people this season. They have two key middies back which will be a great help.

Thunderbirds: Sterling, Garrett, Van De Merwe, Petty, Nankivell, Horjus, Potgieter

Fever: JFR, Glasgow, Cosh, Charles, Francis,Aryang, Bruce

Bit odd to see Nankivell at WA as she is a WD who has really nailed a change over to C, so this should be interesting. I hope it’s not just for the sake of having Petty on court

Michelle Den Dekker is a specialist coach with Fever this year.

Some great tips/intercepts coming to fruition from Van Der Merwe and Garrett. Van Der Merwe really keeping Cosh quiet, forcing Glasgow to take most of the centre passes. The defensive pressure from the Thunderbirds (from C-GK) has been pretty surprising so far, really forcing the Fever’s hand where they can. If they had been able to convert some of their turnovers, they’d have a pretty nice lead. They keep overcooking throw ins or penalties.

From the Fever, Anyang is just looking great, riding Horjus hard. Bruce rattling Potgieter a bit as well. Glasgow’s movements have been really strong, nice cuts and leads, not always used by the mid courters all the time but I guess it’s not that necessary when you have JFR. But her shot percentage has been quite low so far, hopefully just her settling in. On that note, JFR is playing really well, as usual, Sterling should look to go hunting a bit more as the few times she’s done it, she’s either gotten really close or got a hand to the ball. But obviously she needs a bit of a balance.

Thunderbirds lead by 6 at one point but the super shot was well used by Glasgow.

QTR Time: Thunderbirds 15-14 (thanks to the super shot, Fever managed to claw the margin back)

Petty went down a bit awkwardly and got up gingerly (holding her knee) but by herself which is a good sign.

Williams comes on at C (would’ve been tempted to switch Nankivell and Williams)

Bruce getting the better of Potgieter and causing some uncharacteristic misses and turnovers. Would throwing in Austin be too risky? I can’t recall if she played in their Berri match.

Fever struggling in the second phase, eventually leads to a held ball. I’d like to see ATN at WA as Cosh is just not an option.

Glasgow hitting her stride! If Fever are looking to use the super shot this season, Glasgow is their player. I don’t like the super shot but her use of it has pushed Fever into the lead.

WOW! Three seconds left in the second quarter and the umpire forced Thunderbirds to take the centre pass and somehow they convert. Warrants a nice eye roll from Bruce

Some changes for both teams in their line ups for the second half:

Thunderbirds: Nankivell to C, Williams to WA, Gooden to GA.
                            Horjus off.
Edit: Wilson is on at GD, not sure if that was an early change or not.

Fever: Lewis to GK, Bruce to GD, ATN to GA, Anstiss to C.
                            Aryang, Glasgow, and Charles off

McDonald comes on at WA after a timeout.

Commentators say it’s her first pre-season match, which I thought so too but someone on here mentioned she might’ve played against Collingwood.

Gooden looks much more confident on the shot! I think she put up 3 supershots within a two to three minute period!

Potgieter goes for a super shot but the net was caught and it bounced off of it I think… hmmm. Garrett comes back on for the super shot period. Wilson moves to WD, Van Der Merwe off.

                                3 QTR Time: Fever 48-47

A great game, I think if Thunderbirds fine tune those small things, they can cause some upsets. I think I counted three break-ins, at least 4 or 5 wastes throw ins, and way too many turnovers caused my passing errors. They had the opportunity to win in the last 30 second but this is what cost them. Williams came on for five minutes in that lat quarter and pulled in and intercept and a deflection, it was great to see. A lot of positives for the Thunderbirds in that game but lots of room to improve.

Fever have a lot to play around with in attack this year. We finally got a Glasgow/ATN circle and it was amazing to watch. I can’t wait to see Aryang over the next few years, she’s just so exciting to watch.
