Moving circle from the Firebirds is an inspired coaching decision…. If it works!

Loving this Tippett/Dwan circle, it’s especially great for the power five periods. It could also be the future of the team come Aiken’s retirement.

          Exciting half!

Love that new circle without Romelda. Especially in the super shot time. Very clever! Bueta finding her groove now.

Swifts steady as ever. Great game.

I hope this isn’t a prelude for how Dwan will be used this year. On for a bit. Off for a bit. On for a bit. Dwan was amazing last year but I’ve no doubt the substantial level of court time helped her grow into games and the season. Coming on for short stints doesn’t let her settle and it’s reflecting in her shooting stats and turnovers. I know she is unlikely to be starting 7 this year but I’d rather see her play a full quarter than roll on and off.

              1/2 time: Swifts 35-30

So much happened in that Q but nothing happened to the lead. Swifts by 5 and they still look more likely thanks to their attack end. But Firebirds got themselves back into it and trimmed the lead to 3 at one point.

              Wallace has 23/23!

I’d like to see Rudi Ellis get a go at GK. Wallace is very comfortable. Neither FB circle defender has had an impact yet. A lot of penalties (13 and 16 each for Hinchliffe and Jenner).

I also hope we see Bueta and Dwan the other way around. Gretel is obviously an amazing GA but when Dwan is at GA she’s just a foil and doesn’t actually get involved in the play. Given Bueta is sitting on the hold anyway there’s no reason to not play her at GS.

Jenner and Hinchliffe gave up 29 penalties between them in the first half! Hinchliffe now replaced by Rudi Ellis.

Firebirds have hit the lead! 40-38

Firebirds take the lead, Swifts playing very differently this quarter and Firebirds taking advantage and putting on a lot of pressure. The Firebirds midcourt is finding Aiken very well, Ravallion’s existing combination with Aiken is starting to pay dividends and looks like it was never lost. Swifts looking for answers in Garbin and Moore who have come on.

Hinchliffe on at WD, a very interesting change but she already grabbed an intercept. Dunkley and Aiken go off for the last 1.5 minutes and Mimi and Bueta come on. Bueta manages two turnovers within a minute. Swifts take back their lead thanks to a high error power five.

                        3/4 Time: Swifts 48-45

Great game! Lots of people tipping these 2 for the grand final. And if THIS game was the grand final you wouldn’t be disappointed. So intense, so much skill under pressure. Swifts lost the lead but regained it. Still slight favourites.

Teams going goal for goal in this last Q but that’s not enough for Firebirds. They need to pick up possession somewhere. Swifts 54-51

                              How’s this for a shocking stat. Penalties: 74 Firebirds – 38 Swifts

Wow!!! Great defence Firebirds, Bueta sinks a 2 pointer and Firebirds take the lead! Timeout.
