I think Laura’s Diamond’s selections are a pretty good reflection of what the team should be based on performance this season but I can’t help but worry that SM will throw in some extra fever midcourters 🙄

It’s interesting to me they both have Browne in their 7s, especially considering we don’t really have any holding shooters (except for Garbin). Australian midcourts have become so difficult to select, there are about 10 girls who on their best day would easily be good enough to make the team. I’m not sure if any midcourter has locked down a spot now that Watson is out.

I think if Wood can get herself fully fit her and Koenen are the starting shooters. Bueta is far too costly with turnovers at the moment.

Midcourt will be so hard, I feel like everyone has shown patches of brilliance this season but no one has been consistently putting their hand up for a starting spot.
If Charles makes it again though I might officially flip and start barracking for NZ 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

It also pains me that Bassets name is still in the mix even on the bench. She was an absolute star for Australia for so many years but her time has well and truly been and gone. With emerging talent like Garbin/Koenen in the GS spot and a game that is evolving on from a tall holding shooter it would feel like 5 steps backwards to pick her over a young development prospect.

I completely agree about Bueta. I’ve found it fascinating how much hype she and Harten have gotten this year when they’ve both been far and away the most expensive players in the competition. Bueta averages 7 turnovers a game, Harten 8. Obviously they’re both amazing players and I think Gretel’s athleticism post pregnancy has been remarkable, but she’s hardly a shoe-in for the 7. To be honest, I think there were a few games there where Firebirds would have been better off using Dwan.

I think a lot of people have been selected/hyped up on reputations this season when really it’s been the young kids stepping up the most. I think selections will be interesting because if you go by reputation the team is very different to current form.
Big test for SM to show whether she’s up for a partial/full rebuild and if she’s gutsy enough to make the calls on players who are out of form.
