Haythornthwaite has good games but overall she’s too inconsistent and is surplus to demands in this team. Fraser is probably the best midcourt benchwarmer in the competition. Just continue with Proud, Hadley and Fraser and then sign Burgess or O’Shannessy. Maybe try and nab a WD player from interstate or overseas.
Stanton has regressed. She should have moved from Fever when they brought in Fowler. Barkmeyer has a lot of potential but I still feel like they might have promoted her too soon. If they got a better interstate/international shooter though it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.
Dehaney is great, hopefully her and Proud’s injuries aren’t serious. It will be interesting to see what Vixens do next year in their defence end.
Assuming they all want to stay I think Vixens will keep the status quo defensively. I expect they will want ATN. ATN can cover WA so a midcourt of Moloney, Watson, Smith and ATN to slide over provides cover. ATN and Barkmeyer to share the GA. Smith is showing enough in C for me for that to continue. Reminds me of Chokljat.
I agree Barkmeyer has been promoted too soon. When you consider that she hasn’t played VNL championship division and only a couple of ANL games she is doing very well to fit in. In hindsight I think McKinnis left her off for so long today to protect her. But she is there now and their best GA option. Give her the court time to grow.
I’d like to see Vixens bring Samason in to the 10 next week for Stanton. Yes she is more of a GA than a GS but she is a confident shooter and that’s what the Vixens need. A few years ago McDonald had all the promise but she has regressed. A great play maker but not a high volume shooter. Can cover WA though so maybe they should look to her.
Tayla Honey deserves a chance in the 10.
I know GS isn’t Vixens problem but is it worth giving Dehaney a go there when she isn’t needed down the back? She plays across the 2 positions back in Jamaica.
I agree. Nat has great patches and some not so great patches where she just gets caught running. Was disappointed when Proud when off in the final quarter injured that we didn’t see Tayla.
Stanton was just awful today. Gotta wonder again what a game like that does for her mental wellbeing when she was clearly off the boil. Ruby had to either come back on earlier or how about be left on to figure it out for herself. From where I was sitting she wasn’t doing anything terrible at the start of the game to warrant a spell on the pine.
Vixens clearly didn’t do enough to fill the gaps of Thwaites and Phillips earlier as we all know Glasgow would have been a terrific replacement.
I don’t want to pre-emptively demote two amazing players (and Diamonds representatives at that), but I don’t think it will be long before the best backline for the Vixens is Smith/Eddy/Dehaney, at least based off current performances. I would already be switching Eddy and Weston, plus giving Dehaney the start.
I would also give Samason and Honey a go in the ten. I mean what exactly is there to lose?
I don’t think ATN is really a GA at SSN level unless she’s feeding a 60+ goal a game GS. Vixens would be better to go for an Import or for a different interstate player (say Gooden, Garbin, Letherbarrow etc.). It may seem harsh but I just don’t think in twelve months time ATN will offer any more at GA than Barkmeyer and Samason will.
There’s a video clip on the Swifts facebook page of the locker room after the game and it looks like the issue is Prouds foot – not ankle.
As for Vixens not doing enough for succession planning post Thwaites and Philip. I agree. However, covid didn’t help. Barkmeyer was a TP that didn’t go to the hub. Due to covid she was training in her backyard in Bendigo with her dad and brother rather than playing VNL (cancelled) and ANL. Perhaps Vixens regret not taking her over McDonald to the hub. McDonald went to the hub and has since fallen somewhat out of favour. McDobald also missed out on the final WYC squad selection where Barkmeyer made it. Samason has only returned to playing this year in VNL. She was ready last year but had no VNl or ANL to play. They should be converting Samason to a GA IMO. Get her in the 10 now.
I’m actually just not sure Victoria have the shooters coming through more broadly. Caris is a good young GS who will probably play for Fury this year after playing AFLW. Uneeq Palavi as well but again a GS. Jane Cook is still playing VNL but again a GS. Emily Andrew and McDonald will probably be the Fury GAs.
ATN is the best GA from Victoria in the last 10 years or so (post Philip). Obviously she has had huge issues.

I agree al_ex and that’s why they signed Smith and Eddy this year. Long term they didn’t want to lose Smith. Will be interesting to see what happens with Mannix. Had off season hip surgery. But maybe if they do lessen their defenders she may be the one to go..??!!
Gooden is Victorian so yes they could look to her. But similarly to your views on does ATN offer more than Barkmeyer in 12 months time does Gooden? ATN can at least offer a WA change up.
They should go after either Dwan or Dwyer but don’t think they will.
I’d be bringing Samason in now (Honey as well). Then they’d know of that is a long term option.

I think the shooters (Stanton Barkmeyer) would be performing differently, if Liz Watson was playing.
Where did the crowd go, or was it not 1 ticket gets 2 games.
1/4 time: 14-14
Great game. Good battles all over the court. End to end stuff with two quality sides. The two teams are so far a combined 1/6 from super shot range. Ability to sink those shots could prove vital later.
Sue, the Giants beanie and scarf are the same colour as your skin. Ompha loompa …glad you can laugh at yourself….very funny.
Bueta is such an awesome player. I love her in at GS, her splits and holds are so impressive. Mi Mi on the other hand is a bit reckless, I think they need Dunkley back on. Such a high quality game overall, Dwyer and Harten are so good. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Dwyer/Bueta circle at Diamonds level.
1/2 time: Giants 37-30
Firebirds scored 16 goals in that Q which would normally be great, but Giants scored 23! The big stat is Giants only 8 turnovers so far. If they keep that error rate so low, it’s going to be mighty hard for Firebirds to come back.
