Apart from Mes, our GAs in NZ are failing to fire this season. Faulkner is playing better than last year, but hasn’t been out for a full 60
Mes has only played in four games and not even full games and people seem to be lauding all over her. Let’s just wait to see what the rest of the season brings. I really don’t think she is ahead or Tiana or Tiana is ahead of her. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
ANZ form doesn’t make for selection if the recent Quad cup is to go by. Vui averaged around 23 minutes across the ANZ last season and was included in the team because she had a good week at trials. She then traveled with the team and didn’t even get on the court. :negative:
Who knows what Noles is going to do, does she even?
LOL Nesian
I don’t see anyone lauding over Bailey
It’s great to see her back to her old form is all.@minkie, you do know what lauding means don’t you?
Some people are lauding Mes and it’s not a bad thing.
I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing in relation to her being selected in the Ferns over the likes of Metuarau.
I’m assuming they are taking four shooters to the Comm games and I think Meels and Nweke will be included in the team. At this stage the rest of the shooters would be fighting for the other two positions, one GA and one GS. This leaves Mes, Metuarau, Vui, Falkner, Hume fighting for the GA spot but at this point in the season the front runners would have to be Mes or Metuarau. Wilson would probably take the remaining GS spot.
Some people are saying Metuarau is playing her way out of the team and I’m just trying to figure out what the reasoning is.
I am saying shes playing her way out of selection because her game is the same as its been last year but doing much less. She either jumps into the circle, slams into the defender, and lets be honest if they never changed the short pass rule(which i think is ridiculous) she wouldnt have any incircle skills with shooter to shooter tactics which is cluttering the circle and making it easier for defenders to get tios on ball cause it blocks the umpires view.
Even the commentary have pointed out that she hasnt been getting into the circle and floating outside, she doesnt put up enough of a volume as a GA to take the pressure off the GS, and she cant play GS to add any versatility.
So @nesian i hope that answers your question and ill also ask the same back to you… why would you take Metuarau over Mes?
Yeah I know what lauding means but thanks for asking
Maybe you’re missing alot, maybe nothing
Will have to see how the season pans out, who puts themselves forward for Ferns selection and take it from there.@Nate , I wasn’t specifically pointing at you in relation to questioning Metuarau over Mes. I’ve read similar comments elsewhere and I’m just trying to figure out the reasoning but cheers for the reply, a debate is always fun.
It’s interesting because the things that you list as a negative, I see as a positive. She does jump back into the defender which is perfectly legal and at the same time positions herself closer to the net and there is less chance of her rolling her ankles the way she performs it. The short pass? Well in my opinion Metuarau is the most creative GA in the ANZ. She finds ways to get the ball to her GS and she is often thinking one play ahead of where the ball actually is. Again, it’s perfectly legal and I’ve only seen her get called for a short pass once this season which was on Sunday, in fact that’s the only short pass call that I’ve seen so far over the whole competition. I see no problem playing to the rules.
Volume wise it’s hard to compare because only TP and Metuarau have played any real minutes at GA for extended periods of time. The Stars, Mystics, Steel and Magic have all had players who share the GA role. I really can’t say if she is putting up enough shots or not.
I wouldn’t actually take Metuarau over Mes at this point in time. I prefer to wait until the end of the season to make that judgement. To try and compare the two where one has played 7 games and the other just over 3 isn’t useful.
Heck, for all we know neither might make the team and Heffernan makes the team, one never knows with Nolene.
In my head the only certainties are Nweke and Burger. I would then pencil in Jury, Fitzpatrick and Ekenasio. All the rest really seem to be there for the taking.
@nesian thank you for your input, I too appreciate open discussion, yeah we all are probably jumping the gun with selections but it is fun to speculate lol.
Hahaha I think maybe heffernan is a step too dar even for Noels and her sometimes questionable selections hahaha
Yeah that short pass wasn’t even a short pass and was weird even hearing that call again.
Technically jumping into the your defender isn’t legal as you as the attacker are forcing a contact but take that with a grain of salt with umpiring nowadays lol.
I’ll agree with Burger and Jury to be in cause both are playing very consistent netball.
The article NS Scoreboard Anzac 2022 Round 7 has Kelera Nawai Caucau named as most intercepts in the Mystics Stars game. She plays for the Tactix. Does anyone know if it was Phoenix or Sulu, or do they have the right name and wrong game?
And they have a photo of ‘Paris Lokotui’ who has had a stellar season. I’m absolutely certain that is not Paris Lokotui, looks awfully like Paris Mason to me.

Hi, I’ve fixed the intercept stat. It was the right player / wrong game. And I can’t see that photo you mentioned.
Thanks Ian. There was some good defence at the weekend so wasn’t sure who took the most. The photo has gone now which is better than having the wrong one. 🙂
@nesian you make a great point about most of the GAs playing limited game time.
I do feel Faulkner would be running out full games, if they were tighter. Mystics have the luxury of making that change, due to them having healthy leads (not all the time, but I feel most of the time).
I am more worried about our midcourt. There’s got to be some changes in there. I hope DNT takes a specialist C please 🙏
Gosh didnt Wilson have a shocker, i was 50 % feeling bad for her 50% thinking Wills should of benched her earlier. She was in the high 90%s last week too shes got the shooting potiental, its like the pressure gets to her to much towards the middle/end of season
Wilson is struggling. It’s just not the dominant player we saw in the first half of last year.
Hope she pulls it together and not get worse like last season, like you said @Ian strong first half of the season then 😖.
A few things you notice with Maia is that she gets involved with the argy bargy too much, if a defender whacks into her then she has to hit them back, she’s a very strong woman that just needs to hold strong and not get into it with the defender and stop holding with her face into the defender and spin off its easy to read and can miss some very easy feeds and actually be open to turn.
Also I find she’s too under the post with her shoots sometimes, she has to kinda arch back to shot it up which is very awkward to do and also to watch.
Also agree that she needs to stand down from the captain role and refocus on her game, only kinda realised Gina is SF Captain but not for her own club.
