@Ian, having never seen Manu’a play prior to this season, is she playing better than normal or has she always played like this?
She reminds me of Fakahokotau , very physical. She seems to be playing well though although she does through some poor passes at times.Jury could have easily got MVP again, she is playing so well.
Nice to see Wilson get her shot back this game.
It’s enjoyable having netball to watch on Wednesday nights.
I haven’t seen enough from Johnson to think she is in contention for selection. There are better performing players in the competition to date than her.
Yes, no Jane Watson changes things completely.
Yeah Maryann, I think I was just thinking consistency in this crazy world. But before I typed Johnson’s name I had been wondering if I was mistaken that she played for the Stars. I know the team has missed games, but she wasn’t even started in either GD or WD today.
@JR I think she may have started and possibly played one full game, right at the start when most of the team were dealing with covid fall out. The rest of the time she has played around half a game.
@Nesian imo and I am no expert I think Manu’a is playing a cleaner game than when she was playing for the Giants. Less late hits is the best way to describe it. To me she looks fitter and faster than the last couple of seasons – I always felt that she and Poolman as the defence duo were too similar in playing style and too slow.I think we are seeing a result of the stop/start season from the Stars. They are a good side but too frequently were never able to set up on attack.
I would like to see SF play to their strengths and select 5 defenders.
I hope Burley gets a look in, I think she’s carrying on her form from last season.
I don’t know why, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sulu gets left out. Not that I think she deserves to be, just can see it happening.I think Noels’s plans for Burger will really affect the make-up of both the midcourt and defence.
IMO without Jane behind her, Karin’s most helpful to the Ferns at WD, wearing down opposition WAs. During Series she really didn’t gel with any of the GK options.
If that’s Karin’s role, then there’s no room for Winders and it probably secures Kersten’s spot as C/back-up WD (as much as it pains me). I’m assuming Crampton and Saunders will get picked as well.
For the ‘four defenders’ definitely Jury. And for argument’s sake Fitzpatrick, Karaka and Manu’a. Two club pairings who I think will need to rotate half games, especially come knock out time for fresh legs.
In the past, Burger has been used at GD with Karaka GK, which has worked really well. However I don’t remember it being used in the latest Quad series.
Burger is great at getting that ball lifted, which works well for aerial players like Watson/Karaka. It’s probably why she does well at WD?
I probably wouldn’t select Manu’a. I think Aus and England would not find her a threat at all. Even in the SSN, she was quite average. I thought some of her best playing days was at Magic partnered with LDB.Johnson is a tricky one. Cause she has proven to perform at SFs level. But her recent form in the ANZ doesn’t reflect that. If she can lift her form, I would take her. A back line of Karaka/Johnson/Burger would be very tough.
Another quiet game from Crampton.
I really interested in who will make the cut for the SF midcourt. I love Burger at WD, and for the C bib sake hope Winders doesn’t get the selection@hbhp was gonna say the same thing with crampton, for reasons unknown the Stars attacking line up just doesn’t work any more, it’s a real struggle and they’ve been together a few seasons now.
Johnson id say will be left out she tends to just be chasing people around atm
Burger is better as Wd for SF especially if she’s needed to shut down the opposing WA
Will give Tiana props she played much more engaged this game and more willing to turn and shoot.
Can anyone tell me know the Pulses injured players are? Thought Pederson was in for Gordon but is still playing? BTW Pederson is having a blinder of a season compared to at the Pulse, also the subbing in of players for the Pulse is annoying to watch lol
Manu’a did play best at Magic back in the day, went to Oz and got super rough and dirty and now I think she’s playing a mix of both styles, the jury is still out if thatll work at the SF 😆I noticed in the commentary, Jenny woods mentioned MRB pushing off her opponent in attack to get the ball. After watching, I agree with her. Wonder if this gets called at international level.
Also made me think when Dunn debuted for the Ferns she got called for a lot of offensive contacts, she seems to hold her opponent off with her hand at her moment. I’m not an umpire so not sure on the ruling. But also maybe a concern internationally too@Nate Pedersen was originally a temporary replacement for Gordon but she has since become the replacement for Binnian Hunt who did her ACL.
They also have Courtney Elliott to come in, although I’m not sure when that will actually happen because we are pretty much halfway through the season now and she is still sitting on the secondary bench. I believe she was on a return to play plan from covid but perhaps she is carrying an injury.
purely based on current form and consistency (my opinion) I’d so far have in my ‘team’ – yes I know the numbers are wrong
Defence: Jury, Karaka, Manu’a (has def cleaned up since the first couple of rounds) Burger and one of Burley or Temu – more likely Burley
Middies: Saunders, MRB, K Heffernan, Lokotui, Winders
Shooters: Nweke, Dunn, Metuarau, Ekenasio, MesI know nothing about Elliot’s case but I feel that there are a number of players struggling with return to form after covid. Crampton (based on the report that Harrison was the only Stars player not to contract it) looks slower and tired. Hume started great guns this season but is battling now and has said herself that her first game back brain fog was dreadful. Johnson was slow to return and is definitely not a force at the moment. Fitzpatrick took/is taking a long long time to regain health and both she and Saunders said their fitness at seasons start was less than 70%.
Apart from holding which is fairly obvious on TV there are shooters who really need to review their footwork which is not being called by umpires. Maybe international umpires will pick it up more. One question – if the defence is in position three feet behind Metuarau before she receives the ball and backs into them with pass, back, pass, back, who should be called or can the defence not move at all. I see it happening so much and defence backing and backing away but surely if they were there first they should not have to move.
@Maryann I agree, I was always taught that you needed to turn around with the ball for the defence to need to move 3 feet further back, and then another pass out and in (I hated that so just used to shoot from where ever I got it from in the first instance), and there needs to be a clearer definition of landing space, it’s bugged me for years, when Laura used to fly in feet first – best way to do an ankle!! to me landing space is when you jump upwards – you need to be given space to land below – when giant leaps are being taken (Tiana is the one who I think utilises this to the limit) the other players are unfairly penalised just for the fact they are standing in one space meters from where the person takes the ball (again just my opinion)
