Kumwenda has had some of the best matches of her career against NZL, a shot from the circle edge after the half time whistle ends an amazing half. Some absolute magic from her, she’s single-handedly dominated the Ferns defenders. Malawi just can’t turn ball over on defence, Nweke too strong.
NZ went on a bit of a run in Q3, extending the gap to 11 but Malawi chipping it back. Now 41-33 halfway through
Kumwenda went off for Mvula after missing two sitters under the post. She came on well and is up against Jury as a nice teaser for them being teammates next year.
Q3 51-39 to NZ
NZ definitely stepping up a gear in the latter half of that quarter, but Malawi still pushing them to the end. Ferns should take this but but hopefully only within 10 goals, and not as convincing a win as the scoreline would suggest.
Mes on as WA for Q4
A great game to watch, a real attacking masterclass. The clash of styles was a great advertisement for world netball. Nweke was just way too strong for the Malawi defenders and all of the NZL attackers were steady. By far their best performance.
Too many silly errors in the second half from Malawi and the intensity just died a bit after Kumwenda missed those two shots and the margin blew out to 10+. Hopefully the injury to Lwazi wasn’t too serious, it looked like a cramp to me. Mvula will dominate in ANZP with more experience. It would be nice to see Galeta get a VNSL contract as well, she has such speed and creativity but is a little bit more steady than Lwazi in my opinion. She’s also younger and taller.
I don’t think the Ferns will make the Gold Medal match, not because they played badly but rather because they actually played as well as they have recently and they still couldn’t shake the Malawi attack end for about 40 minutes. They just don’t have the personnel across WD, GD and GK to compete with the best teams. Bronze would be a good achievement considering the opposition and the loss of Watson, Burger and Ekenasio.
When did Hadley get injured? Australia chose to take an injured player and a second under load management to commonwealth games? Going to make it tough for Diamonds from here.
Obviously a lot of focus on WA now but that isn’t the position I am most concerned about. Watson, Austin and Wood can cover that. Koenen is playing well so can pick up more circle time to allow them to push out.
But Australia has limited C and WD options now. Moloney will largely be at C and possibly Brazill a bit as well which limits the ability of Moloney to flex back to WD. Weston played WD well today but think that was more the novelty of her three foot pressure. Not an option against the top teams imo. I’d prefer they try Aryang there.
FT: NZ 69-50 Malawi
Slightly deflating end to a great game with Malawi C Lwazi suddenly hunched over with what looked like a knee injury. Hopefully not as bad as it looked.
Jury, Nweke, Heffernan, Crampton and maybe TPSR increasingly look like they’re going to be securing the start for the business end to me….other people’s thoughts?
Nweke played her first (?) 60m game of the tournament ending with 50+ goals, good outing from her.
I would rather have Hadley under an injury cloud than Price. Marinkovich should have taken Proud as the travelling TP, but that’s easy to say in hindsight I guess.
Once the tournament starts though can you bring in TP’s if there’s injuries?

GAINS: M.MAGEE 4Also side note 5 minutes in to the ENG v NIR match (which is now available on 7+) and Sophie Drakeford-Lewis is killing WA. She might be a great change up for England if Metcalf is struggling come the later stages.
Also Cardwell is just an absolute joy to watch and the more I see of her the more I’m excited for her to be part of the Tbirds. Ability aside she seems like she’ll be great for the team culture. No, you can’t bring a training partner in once it starts. So they’ve willingly gone into the comp with Hadley under an injury cloud and even Wood on reduced minutes.
Thanks Ian, I didn’t think so. Interesting decision given how it’s apparently playing out…
One of those things though that if it works out okay you’re never questioned but now it appears to have been re-niggled it’s going to be criticized as the wrong call.Is Wood being on reduced minutes confirmed or rumor?

On the contrary to the praise I have for England’s attack end.. I am struggling big time to enjoy their defence. The combination of EUB/SFB/Guscoth is actually really uncomfortable to watch. They’re quite physical and almost dirty (lots of arm flailing and grabbing) yet somehow find a way to complain to the umpires every time a call goes against them or they cop it back. The attitude just doesn’t look great.
