England with a 10 goal win! I would have predicted a closer scoreline.
England midcourt defence lifted in that last quarter and that made all the difference.
I thought the let down for the Ferns was the midcourt. At times lacking movement and vision.
Weirdly enough, I haven’t lost confidence in this team. Why didn’t NT play Nweke, TPSR, Crampton, Saunders?
Wilson in GA? yeah nah.
Any Thunderbird fans out there? What did you think of your new recruit, Caldwell :mail:
That last qtr wasn’t good enough from the Ferns. What’s happened to Crampton? How good is it that NZ and Aus didn’t top the pools!?!
I’ll wait to see how the Ferns go in the SFs and Medal match, but not great signs. Surely they won’t start Nweke against Sterling, it feels like she’ll get monstered. I’d be tempted to start TPSR and Mes actually.
Imogen Allison had amazing impact at WD. I wonder if she’ll get the start against Australia.
Such interesting SFs! It’ll be so interesting to see who wins through to the finals.
Crampton was average, would like to have seen Mes at WA
With 3ish mins to go Imo Allison came up with a fantastic tip from the defensive third, chased it all the way through the centre third, then hurled it off balance at the very edge of the transverse line to Cardwell alone under the post. This triggered a huge momentum swing with Malcolm getting another gain shortly after in the Ferns’ shooting third, and the Roses piled on maybe 4 or 5 goals in a row in the last 2m of the game. Was a very up and down game until that point for both sides but those last 3m showed England at their most frightening.
Housby really came to life after half time and showed her credentials as a big game player. Not sure what is wrong with Harten, she just looks very uncomfortable and unwilling to go to post. Hope she is ok.
NZ-Jamaica and England-Aus semis…this is going to be one stressful Saturday!
I think all those substitutions were deliberate by Taurua in the game against England. She knows Australia have the mental edge over the Ferns and would prefer to play Jamaica than oz in the semis. Not that Jamaica will be any easier.
Souness and Wilson playing out of position a bit of an experiment. Didn’t seem to work very well. Nweke did ok considering she’s so young. Was outrebounding Mentor. Johnson and Fitzpatrick too slow. Jury didn’t dominate like she does in the nz league.
Harten doesn’t look 100%. I’m predicting an Australia vs Jamaica final with Australia taking out the gold. The Diamonds won’t play like they did in the game against Jamaica. Enjoyed Neville’s commentary.
I was a bit surprised at the talk of scoring ends. Josh Bowring probably called up a little bit more than Bronwen, but I don’t think that really had much of an impact on the play or the score.
A difficult game to assess. England won by a convincing margin but had two big lapses to let the Ferns back in.
The only certainty here seems to be that Jamaica will be playing for gold. I mean that as no disrespect to NZ, they just seem close to unstoppable.
Traditionally, Jamaica play well against NZ, and they are a couple of notches above their usual this tournament.
