I’m reading that the Aussie netball gold was Australia’s 1000th gold medal in Commonwealth Games history – makes that an extra special gold for the girls :rose:

Haven’t seen the games – Monday is a full day grandchild sitting. With reference to Cardwell, she was pretty stroppy in the semis as well. Questioning calls, glaring at the umpires etc. I thought at the time that Thunderbirds have replaced a sometimes stroppy and bad tempered shooter with like. Cardwell is clearly letting praise go to her head but if she wants to be great then she needs to reset. She is newer to this level so hopefully settles.

I was one of the people that doubted Koenen, but it was more after the quad series than her form in SSN. I also felt she played really well on debut in the CC and worked well with Austin.

Koenen did really step up, she was excellent in the pool games and I think today proved she is a master on the baseline and a great change up. It would be hard for a defender to make a switch from the aerial and space game of Bueta to the strength of Koenen on the baseline.

I have been wondering if Wood will retire from international netball now. Either way I don’t think we will see her in the upcoming series.

I’d like to see both Wallam and Dwyer get a run somewhere, same with Proud. Parmenter and RBD.

The crowd chanting “Gary” is interesting. This is probably one of the toughest tournaments for the umpires ever – such a huge crowd and so much backlash in the moment and with comments afterward.

I simultaneously recorded the grand final so I can watch it again without the adverts later. Fortunately channel 7 cut to the action each quarter without lingering on the gasbagging by the station hosts where one can always find instant experts and fans.

Did Kirstie Simpson not go to CWG? I note she got Umpire of the Year at last year’s NNZ Awards.

Also, and this is quite obscure but was the female umpire with Jono Bredin in the 2018 final also a NZer? I just noted when revisiting that game on YouTube recently she appeared to have a Kiwi accent but I didn’t recognize her/have seen her since.

Yes, it was a female Kiwi umpire. I can’t recall her name though. I just went back and looked at some footage, I don’t recall seeing her in the ANZ this year but I hadn’t watched every game.

The crowd chanting for an umpire has to be a first, wow.

So proud of the Diamonds, they really stepped up when it counted, even Moloney who I doubted quite a lot. Klau, wow, and Koenan too. Their ability to come on and slip in almost seamlessly despite minimal court time, amazing.

Think the GC umpire was Lisa McPhail. Not sure I saw her this year in ANZ

                        Yes – that’s the name I couldn’t remember.

I think another thing that stood out for me is what incredible athletes Bueta and Moloney are. Bueta displayed her insane athleticism across the competition. We see it in SSN, but in tournament play it is extra impressive.

Moloney had to play so much with the injury to Hadley – she was a machine. Like many on here, she wasn’t in my Diamonds team, but she brought great attributes to the Diamonds.

                              Here’s some stats;

                              – Australia’s Gold- Their first MAJOR title in 7 years (NWC 2015)

                              – Jamaica’s best podium finish at a major tournament

                              – The first gold medal match not featuring the reigning Commonwealth or World Champions. (ENG, NZL)

                              – Just the second time a 4th ranked team (Jam) has made it to the gold playoff. (NZL at NWC ‘19)

                              – Australia the first team to come 2nd in pool play, to become champions.

                              – First Netball bronze at the games for NZL, the ghosts of the Gold Coast gone.

                              – Same result for England like 20 years ago- finish fourth as the host nation. Also their 3rd non podium finish at the games, other being Glasgow ‘14.

                                  Some interesting stats there.

Although, NZL were not the 4th ranked team going into 2019 NWC. They were ranked number 2 in the world – finishing 4th at the CWG the year prior does not automatically rank them as 4th.
