Ekenasio had a shocker, which ment the mid court struggled. TP did well then went of, when ferns were still in the game, such odd coaching
Given how the Ferns have been travelling I fully expected them to get another turnover at 5 down in the latter stages of that third quarter and then come out after 3/4 time and score the first 3 goals to be even stevens and eventually take the game.
Instead they fell in a hole/the Diamonds put the foot down and it was a 15 goal margin by full time!
Am in two minds about Sunday. Start Heff at C and Johnson WD to help block the vision of the Diamonds feeders OR Gordon at C with her Pulse teammate Souness at WA? To earlier comments, if Ekenasio is back in the groove (fingers crossed!) that will help immensely.
Fantastic games from Weston and Garbin. Richardson what do you do at the Magpies with two true blue GS!
Not the Ferns brightest evening. Little impact from Poi and Gordon was quiet in her first stint. I would have liked to see Johnson in GD when Karaka was spelled. Eke was quiet but no one else stepped up to lead. Thought Grace did well, she was rattled but didn’t lose it – her mental game has improved vastly. Toeava – tbh I wouldn’t be surprised to find she doesn’t have a passport. Then again it’s up to other players to step up. Can’t just have one feeding option. Crampton was missed.

Aussie Diamonds pull off best Constellation Cup performance in two years, amidst sponsorship controversy
Umpiring has been dreadful the whole series, needs to go back to one aussie one nz umpire like during covid. The female SA one was dreadful and Gary gets too caught up with the one court drama. Cant believe no warnings were given out to the aussie defenders. Just not nice netball at all. And the praise they get for it… oh its very willing and physical its just bs. Definitely something wrong when NZ get more contact penalties. I wonder if the Umpires will have a debrief like players and rewatch that match and see what they missed? And if the coaches can submit enquiries about the standards and calls? Hopefully the SA umpire isnt doing the last game as shes already done 3 games.
Nz middies werent clicking at all, agree that maybe maddy in c and souness back to wa would be nice to see. Ive said before that Jury doesnt always play well against a holding shooter, she gets caught on the body too much, but now theyve seen what Garbin brings first hand for a whole game they might be able to adjust in game 4.
she played in the ANZ premiership so would’ve required one for that (and the NZ secondary schools when there was still teh transtasman comp), not to mention she was born in Samoa, so would have to have a passport to travel. like other across the squads (both Women’s and men’s) some times there are commitments out side of netball that are unavoidable especially when it runs pretty much all year round now (and to be honest, up until viewing how she played in the first two tests very few would’ve named her in the squad much less the team to begin with)
100% agree @Nate – I think I said “WTF” more times during that game than I have in quite some time – along with a few other choice phrases (luckily only have my cat who had to listen to me lol) I don’t know how other don’t seem to see it – and use the excuse that the kiwi defence are just as bad – not even close – they are physical but stay well within what is fairplay, they don’t have a ‘win the ball at any cost’ mentality – I would be ashamed to support that sort’ve play – Weston could’ve done herself serious damage when she ended up on the floor – and she’d have no one but herself to blame – there was no way she was ever going to cleanly get that ball, and the very late hip swings once the shooters already had the ball. the umpiring was definetely a let down – I thought it was okay the previous two games but for a number of the sf’s to get the ‘tidy up’ or ‘address your timing’ calls when there was nothing in it, yet the aussies can take out players left right and center and it’s play on. If that’s how they want to play then maybe they should try rugby or league? though I can’t imagine they’d last long without being yellow or red carded.
Seriously considering not watching Sunday’s game – kinda heartbreaking to see what the game I have played, watched and loved my entire life is becoming
Yep im in the same boat @Kerryn. Not gonna watch Sundays match live, depending on whats said after the game and the result depends if ill watch it on replay.
Def not watching Aussie v England, itll be just a smash fest between the two and not skilful.
Already looking ahead to Fast5, its more of a flow through court and less physical.
If a players body is heading in one direction then all of a sudden half their body is heading into another direction and a defender is on them… it means theyve contacted… its not a strive at all.
Im a national A badge umpire and have umpired at all sorts of levels here and in NZ and man theyd be complaints allround if i ever let that stuff happen.
Also any dissent towards an umpire is a caution, depending on whats said it can be a warning or even a straight send off. You are the umpire and you dictate terms on players attitude.Side note i hate the umpires calling the players by their first names and not positions.
Picasso123 – Sure and I only wondered. Toeava is very shy, quiet and unassuming so may not have travelled overseas. Given the delays in passport processing (even urgent), there probably wouldn’t have been time to get her one.
However I do get the impression that it was decided it time to test the four (Toeava, MRB, Poi and Gordon) to see who is the best going forward. No better test than against Australia but probably still hard to tell with last nights vastly improved showing from them.@Nate – same two umpires for game 4.
The umpires watch replays of every game and do analysis. Re cards – JLP would have been sent off with a red card in the second game for two head highs.
I’m not going to comment on the overall physicality/dirty play or whatever last night but I was really disappointed to see Bruce showing off to the Australian crowd by talking back to the umpires – just like the SSN. In NZ she pretty much shut her mouth and behaved with greater decorum. Our girls (Ferns) need to harden up, and absorb that physicality. We need to stop making them out to be victims in this game.
I always cringe at comments when we loose to Aus. Not just on here, but on all social media platforms. It’s the same story “Bruce to physical” “Geitz too rough” “Chatfield rough play” “Gerard soo dirty” these comments date back to Liz Ellis days.
Australia is the WORLD #1. They didn’t get there cause they played nice. Our girls are strong, athletic and fit. Our combinations in the midcourt was not working. I feel once we tidy that up, the delivery to Nweke will be better. Hence there will be clear vision of any contact. This is what Toeava did so well in the first two games. Her passes were precise and into the right space. Defenders either had no hope, or would contact.
Same old thing. When Australia loses, Aussies usually criticise the players (or maybe the coach). When NZ loses, it tends to be the Australians were too rough and the umpires were biased. I personally don’t mind a bit of physicality. Attacking players get things too much their own way in my opinion. In all my years of watching, only one player has gone way over the top, and that was Vili Davu.
