Do Australia elevate another diamond to take on tour now Bueta is out? Or do they have a big enough squad they don’t need to do that?

@McLeod – some of the Ferns were interviewed, Poi was one of them. Said she had had an achilles issue and had taken two and a bit months out to rehab and work on calf strength. Will be great to see how she fires in this series.

Makes sense why she hasn’t been included in any of the previous teams. Surprised it was never announced or spoken about, prior to this.

TB a few players have been out due to niggly achilles. Don’t know why they haven’t announced them.

I was thinking about Dame Noeline’s goal to be ‘3 deep’ in each position….

                      So, thinking we have:

GS: Nweke, Wilson, Te Paea S-R, Ekanasio (4 deep)
GA: Ekanasio, Wilson, Te Paea S-R (3 deep)
WA: Mila R-B, Gordon, Poi (3 deep, but 4 if (Crampton returns)
C: Souness, Gordon, Heffernan (3 deep)
WD: Heffernan, Johnson, Karaka (3 deep at a stretch)
GD: Karaka, Temu (Sulu F at a push, but likely 3 deep once Burger returns)
GK: Jury, Sulu (with Watson to return).

Looking at this, I feel very comfortable with the depth being built – my concern is C and WD. If Heffernan is the back up C, then Cullen needs to be in squad, but that means we are very defence heavy…. I feel like we really lack the flexibility of a Steph Wood type of player who can slide across GA- WA.

Curious to see if this squad reflect an intent to try Johnson at GD, or are they very intentionally going for a 4-5-3 split?

Poi is a C. I think we have good depth in that position.

I’d tag Burger as starting WD with GD slide if needed.

Gordon could even slide into WD if required, she’d be good against speedy WAs.

I really liked our defence line-up in the Quad Series, Jury/Johnson/Burger. Karaka could easily slot in there too.

                                Mila can run C
                                Souness can run WA
                                Gordon can run all 3

I’ve got no concerns about the middies either, they can all play multiple positions easily. I personally don’t see Crampton getting back in. She only plays WA and even then she’s been very quiet except maybe for CWG bronze match. Sulu probably won’t make it either.

Agreed with Maryann that Burger is a WD firstly then slide to GD.

Jury’s out to silence Aussie crowd

It’s been a while since the Silver Ferns last played arch-rivals, Australia’s Diamonds, and this year’s star defender, Kelly Jury, has some unfinished business in the Constellation Cup, she tells Merryn Anderson.
