Agreed Ian – I read it as once Firebirds future plans were revealed to Ellis she decided to pursue another path. Maybe those plans gave her the same or less chance of court time than her new club.
will probably gain a lot training/playing with Bruce as well
It’s interesting that the Tbirds have taken a fair while to announce these last signings.
Makes me wonder whether it’s not such smooth sailing for signings at the moment…Ellis is a smart signing by Fever. In the odd occasion that Bruce was being beaten at GK, it probably wasn’t enough to pull her from the court but there wasn’t really an adequate impact player to move there. This way she could move out to GD and be comfortable there is some height and presence behind her.
Firebirds have me stumped. Common assumption is that they threw everything at Dehaney which made Hinchliffe and Ellis look elsewhere. Then of course they’ve missed out on Dehaney. Or have they signed an import, Fran Williams?
I keep thinking back to the FBs tweet that they had a new player that shined this year. Can’t think of any unsigned Sunshine Girls that are defenders now. Or any Sunshine Coast players either? Or perhaps they meant Moore after all winning a premiership is shining. Bizzare.
Byrne is a very popular coach in QLD. So Hinchliffe wanting to play under her is understandable.
The Lightning defence is very unbalanced for me. Three players whose best position is GK. Yes Shimmin and Hinchliffe can play WD but it’s easily their 3rd position. Will they have the speed and footwork to play against a fit Watson? Browne? Even more unbalanced than Vixens 2021 where WD isn’t Eddy’s best position but she is more at home there than Hinchliffe and Shimmin.
Ellis to Fever is an interesting move. I’d think on the face of it she will actually get less court time than this year. I’m not convinced Ellis is a better player than Lewis who they had. Taller yes. So maybe they wanted the height as backup. Ellis had more court time this year but what Lewis showed in the 19/20 was just as strong. Ellis has the height whereas I’d say Lewis is a bit more explosive. Ellis looks panicked when she gets the ball and transitions to attack. That will only improve with court time of course. As a Diamonds fan I’m happy both along with O’Shannessy have contracts as they are the next group of young GKs (along with Hinchliffe) for Australia and all offer something different.
I can’t think of anyone who “shone” this year that isn’t signed, Super League players being the only exception.
Marweni would be the only other player but she is supposedly not returning – ironically the “shine” clue also fits her description being from Lightning (did I need to point that out, lol).
Yes Annie Miller!! Was just saying yesterday hopefully Byrne picks her up. Tilling signing. Shame for NSW they’ve lost her but great for Miller and Aussie netball. I expect Miller will get quite a bit of court time. Miller, Sligar, Mundy some great young midcourters with contracts. Hopefully Williams and Orr don’t get left behind.
The ‘shine’ clue may have been Ruby Bakewell Doran as I believe she played in the QLD Born to Shine series?
I hear you when you say that Byrne was the lure for Hinchliffe, I really do, but surely her sister being in the squad would have been a bigger party of it? I guess she now hopes that Byrne names Maddie as a TP…
Wow Annie Miller didn’t see that coming, but I guess for her and Batcheldor it makes sense given Byrne is the u/21’s coach. Lightning are definitely planning for the future with this squad but with some really exciting and talented players. Maybe Maddie Hinchliffe will be Tara’s injury replacement, hopefully her or Ash Unie
Miller is a great signing for Lightning, and Lightning is a great team for Miller. I expect she’ll get a lot of court time and wouldn’t be surprised to see her starting in 2023 especially if Scherian does decide to move on. She’s less diverse than Williams but really is the best young pure WA available.
I wonder if Firebirds were targeting Sterling and then T’Birds managed to keep her around. I feel like Hinchliffe and Ellis wouldn’t pick up and leave with the signing of Dehaney, but I know I personally wouldn’t want to be sitting behind Sterling for two seasons.
I’ve been wondering for a while if the Firebirds are one of the teams that are really struggling financially. The three start-up teams have external backing and the Swifts and Vixens are exceptionally popular teams. We know the Fever have money. It really only leaves T’Birds and Firebirds. It would explain those two teams losing out on some players in recent recruiting periods.
Teigan O’Shannessy (Swifts), Kelly Singleton (Swifts) and Annie Miller (Lightning) were all teammates at Manly in the NSW Premier League this year.
Has one club ever provided three first-time SSN contracted players in the same year before?
I thought O’Shannessy had a Giants contract in 2020 but withdrew and was replaced by Brandley?
Liz Watson joined Vixens in 2014 and a year later was followed by Mannix and Chloe Watson. All played for City West Falcons. So did Moloney who from memory joined Vixens in 2013 and prior to that Tegan Philip. They were quite the feeder club for Vixens for a few seasons.
