I’m going to offer a different view on things. I think it’s the defence that’s letting Magic down. The attackers need to be able to play with flair and pace, and know that if they make a mistake it’s ok because their defence will turn it back for them. This wasn’t the case, so then Magic attack played more and more conservatively, which made things worse.
While I don’t think Kersten or Elley played great, Mikaere was the weakest link tonight as Wilson was always available. If Takarangi was with Malesala it went into Wilson easily, but if Takarangi dropped back to Wilson, Malesala was able to do what she wanted. Magic’s centre pass defence isn’t strong enough, so Crampton could get first phase easily, and then find a simple outlet pass after that.
Tighten up the Cpass defence, have the GK take care of Wilson and then everyone else can do their own job.
Kersten @ C needs to be paired with a really dynamic WA, as she’s not a player who is on and off the circle edge re-offering. Wilbore is the best option they have, so they need to throw all their faith behind her. Edgecombe made a number of basic errors (namely dropped balls) and so unfortunately I don’t think she’s a viable option there going forward.

Pulse up 13-8 over Steel at 1/4 time.
Anyone else pick up Meels post game interview… “things happening behind closed doors as a franchise.” And also “not getting the clear instruction or direction as they were last week.”
Maybe hinting at coaching??
Full time: Pulse 57-37
Poor old Steel. Their quarters so far this year have produced 10, 8, 10, 10, 8, 8, 12, and 9.
I feel for Sammy Winders, she has gone from one struggling team to another. Fisher is a massive loss for the Steel and it is definitely showing.
Glad to see Georgia Heffernan putting up good volume, won’t be long before she joins her sister in the Ferns IMO.
Maybe Phoenix Karaka could come over and give a hand with shooting 😉
In seriousness, their shooting lineup should really be able to produce more. Once Tui is fit to play those numbers should increase- if Georgia Heffernan can shoulder more of the load and really stand up during this time, she’ll head straight for the Silver Ferns. Two not very close games. Looking forward to some games with the top 4. Switched off watching in the third quarter of both games.
Mikaere the weak link in the magic side. Didn’t pose any threat to Wilson who was unimpeded the whole game.
Pulse looked good again but what was the point of putting Mvula on for the last 2 minutes? Very demotivating for a player. The game was gone by the end of the third quarter. She could have gone on for the whole of the fourth quarter. Will be interesting to see how the Pulse go against the stronger teams. Bit hard to gauge where they are really at from their first two games since the Steel and Magic look to be the bottom two teams.
Aaaarrrgghhhh I really thought Magic were the real deal. I haven’t seen the game yet, but hugely disappointing result.
I think Coach Noel’s might need to step in at Magic, Ferns can’t afford for Meels to be out of sorts for the next 13 games.
@Nate – yes, my husband even picked up on the comments. There were background issues a few years back, maybe they haven’t been resolved but in this WC year we can’t afford to have any of our Ferns struggling with their games or goings on behind the scenes. Also while I was pleased that Meels was named Captain given her incredibly busy mum life/commuting life/netball life and previous mental health struggles I was concerned that this would be too much.
Winders at WA is still a big no from me. She really needs to clean her game up still, getting cautioned each game is not good enough
It’s almost like watching a repeat of the last season at the moment with Magic
I’ve seen quite a few comments re Mvula getting very little court time and whilst I feel for her, if this were SSN for example and a local shooter was getting court time over an import would there be an uproar?
I for one am pleased that Walmsley is being backed in, she has obviously been training well and deserves the GS bib, and it can only benefit our shooting stocks for the future.
Shame Mvula can’t be traded to the Steel, they could really use a shooter like her.
@Maryann thats right forget about those grumblings before.
@Moooz totally agree im glad Walmsley is getting the start over an import. Shes been playing well, Pulse could be feeding into way more often and sooner as she is holding her space very well. She did seem to be a bit ginger on her strapped leg when landing though. -
