I would also have tried Hadley at WA. She plays there week in week out for the Swifts so she’s not exactly a novice.

This is perhaps an unpopular opinion but I think Watson can be a bit complacent at times. She always delivers in the big games, but when a match has slightly lower value she starts to make silly mistakes (a few steps and breaking calls) and can lack aggression on her drives. It’s been obvious at Vixens and also some of the games the Diamonds have lost or struggled through (e.g. the Jamaican pool game at CWG and the England loss at NWC). It’s understandable but I don’t think she’s always bringing the intensity that she can. The SCL change-up is a good decision for her.

If Mundy can work on her C game (not sure she’ll have a lot of opportunity to do that at Vixens to be honest) I think she’d be a valuable change-up. Proud is also great across both. I’d even like to see a bit of Proud in WD next season with Hadley and Gorman-Brown in front of her, she is strong defensively.

I completely agree al_ex , that’s why as a Vixens and Diamonds fan the move excites me. Has potential to work out well for all parties.

I think Mundy will play some C next year. Start at WA but cover C under two scenarios, one with Zara Walters at WA (who I rate very highly) and secondly as an attacking change up with Kumwenda – Garbin – Austin (WA) ahead of her.

Proud is a great WD. I remember seeing her play there a lot when she was in underage teams. Would like to see that at Swifts and would definitely help Proud crack Diamonds.

Fun fact: The Silver Ferns have beaten Australia the last 5 times they’ve played in NZ.

But the Diamonds have won the past 8 times the two teams have met anywhere else!

It is four years to the day since NZ last beat Australia in a test outside NZ.

Finally watched this game! Absolutely stoked that we got the win.

I feel the difference in this game was the way it was umpired. Our defenders were allowed to contest ball. Nweke was lucky not get pulled for pushing off, which really surprised me. Considering in the 2nd test she was getting pulled for just standing there

NZ look like school yard kids, when they’re trying to bring the ball down court. It looks so messy and seems to lack any type of structure. Players are still running on top of each other, they make it look terribly hard. The other main thing I noticed, NZ players never do a front cut (except Toeava). The run behind their players or around them.

Okay enough of the negative from me, anyone would think that we’d lost

I was surprisingly impressed with Metaurua. Ekenasio struggled to get away from her player, but Metaurua didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I wonder if spending the last few seasons training against Manu’a, has built her for this style of play.
She also gets herself into the circle, and uses her playmaking skills to work it. I thought they pulled her too early, but it all worked out!

Souness speed helped them out a lot. She was a bit costly at times, but was happy to see her on the court.

I’m wondering if the captaincy is taking its toll on Ekenasio? We’ve seen it happen over the years, when a shooter becomes captain, it affects their game. In saying that, I wouldn’t want anyone else (atm) taking it.

Re Liz Watson: I think it’s a big call to take her off. Not because there’s no other player that can play her position. But I think NZ would see that as a win, and give them huge confidence. Anytime a Diamonds captain is dragged (especially against NZ), it gives us that mental edge. Heffernan was having a good game, but it was still a close contest.

I’m not very surprised or disappointed by the result. It’s good for both teams. The one thing I thought was a bit regretful from a Diamonds perspective was not leaving Koenen on at GA for at least some of the 3rd quarter to see how that option worked, and to give Austin a longer break to watch the play. I’m on the side of feeling that Dwyer isn’t quite ready yet to be thrown on in a high pressure game.

I think Koenen has been excellent in this series but I would still like to see Garbin start next match. JLP as well.

Completely agree. Heffernan was enormous. My MVP.

I understand that changing Watson may have been seen as a win for NZ but Diamonds really should have changed WA. Surely you’d rather they get that win than one on the scoreboard.

Watson could also have moved to centre with Hadley or JLP at WA. It worked for Vixens against Thunderbirds in their second SSN game when Wilson had shut Watson down in their previous game. JLP was playing really well at centre though. Can JLP play WA? She might match up well against Heffernan.

I was hoping Heffernan would move to C, cause I thought that would have been a great matchup with JLP.

I’d like to see JLP playing some WA at Giants next season. She’s done a full 180 degrees and I now think she’s stronger in attack than in defence to be honest. JLP/Winders/Sligar would be a good midcourt. It would be great for the Diamonds to have 4 C, 3 WA and 3 WD options in their midcourt. Add in Aryang at WD and Austin at WA and they have so many choices.

Did CBass just say, NZ can win by 17 cause Sophie Garbin is starting?
I feel she didn’t mean to say that, but did

Austin and Garbin look nervous. Hope they can have a good start and settle in quickly! This will be a tough game for the Diamonds.

Surprised to see JLP get the nod in WD over Aryang.
