Both teams looking hesitant, defences on top. NZ have made too many turnovers so far. Australia leads 9-4 after 9 minutes.

          1/4 time: AUS 15-12

          Nweke 9/10 (90%)
          Ekenasio 3/3 (100%)

          Garbin 12/12 (100%)
          Austin 3/4 (75%)

Brilliant work from Gordon to create a turnover and narrow the gap, but the Diamonds go to the first change up by 3. Gordon has 6 assists, Watson 8!

Ekenasio can’t get away from Weston.

Inside the last 5 minutes second Q and the Diamonds are up by 3.

                1/2 time: AUS 28-26

                Nweke 20/21 (95%)
                Metuarau 0/0

                Garbin 24/25 (96%)
                Austin 4/6 (67%)

The Ferns won the quarter by 1. Both teams very methodical in attack and with good hands over defence down court. Ekenasio was replaced by Metuarau late in Q2.

Happy to see Koenen and Moloney come on, though I wish those changes happened a bit earlier.

Well, the Constellation Cup is out of their reach, but remember, NZ has beaten Australia the last 5 times these teams have met in NZ. Will they do it again today to square the series? Ekenasio has come back on. Aus 45-44 with 9 minutes left.

Ferns in front! Their defence is all over the Diamonds at present.

Well that was a great battle. Ferns were lucky, they turned over a lot of ball.

Kind of humid in Auckland today and Spark literally has no air movement down on the arena floor so I suspect both the floor and ball were rather sticky and slippery.

So good to see Ferns vs Diamonds and it really shows that the Ferns need decent international competition if they are going to be competitive in the future. Kudos to Australia for sending their best players over.

If Koenen is GA then Moloney should not be C. Koenen was shooting well (albeit she too was passing off when she would normally shoot so maybe the game plan?) but doesn’t have the court craft and work rate in GA. The South African series is for working on that not this game. They need either Austin or Hadley on to take the hard drives and open space because when they were both off all the Diamonds were standing around behind their players. Weston’s poor pass was the first symptom of that (no options) and rather than address the attack they benched Weston. They lost the connection to Garbin when they started playing around with their attack.

What is with Metuarau’s defence? She is late and deliberate. Other than that NZ were great and well deserved wins for them. Nweke makes a massive difference! Really enjoyed Maddy Gordon’s game today.

@Tully – Metuarau reminds me of how JLP used to be – but to her credit (or her coaches) she has improved somewhat.

Watched the second half of that game.

Goodness me the Ferns attackers were doing everything they could to turn the ball over.

Jury and Burger were immense and it was fantastic they could get the win for Burger’s 50th cap. I think Burger has leapfrogged her VC for that starting GD bib and Watson has been shutout of GK off the back of Jury’s last two performances in particular.

The ceiling on Metuarau’s potential is (currently) her fitness. She can get away with it at ANZP level and she’s an impact player at international level at best. If she wants to be a 60 minute player in the black dress, there’s work to do and she’s absolutely got the talent to do it. I see her future as a WA/GA slide.

I hope Taurua keeps this group together for Quad Series in January and lets them consolidate. By all means, if there’s form dips/lifts in ANZP make changes for the September international window but we need to build.
