I’d like to see diamonds develop another GD option. Really don’t know why weston was taken off. But would have been amazing to have had an RBD to turn to because the Klau change didn’t work. I think Aryang would have been more value in HD than WD today.

Might be crazy but for Quad series I’d like to see them run a team with 5 defenders given Aryang is mainly used at WD, JLP is best at C and Austin can cover WA. 4 shooters, 3 middies, 5 defenders (including Aryang who will be the WD).

I wonder if Horjus will get a look in if she plays GA next season?
By the looks of it, SM prefers that play maker style GA (Wood). I really hope Dwyer gets a chance to show what she can do, she has such an impressive shot on her.

I didn’t catch the whole game, but I was surprised not to see Weston on Ekenasio in that last quarter. Eke really struggled to get away from her, earlier in the game. I’m guessing that’s why she was dragged for metaurua.

I came on here to say what has already been said about having Koenen at GA and Moloney on at C together. Just no.

I know Bruce is a great player and she had some good moments today, but I honestly feel that Klau is better suited to the matchup on Nweke in some ways. It reminds me a bit of when Australia had Geitz and Layton and there were times where I think Layton really would’ve been a better option on court, even if not for the whole game, but she just sat on the bench or played out of position.

I don’t think Toeva would’ve made a massive difference to the scoreline. She can be brilliant, but she can be expensive and if she isn’t fit enough to meet the NZ benchmarks at WA, the Diamonds would’ve exposed it.

I would also like to see Garbin have a bit more range. She was often pretty close already and the extra pass when under a lot of pressure is just a chance to lose the ball.

I think Australia have a great GA in Austin, she has already performed for them in big moments, unfortunately her shooting hasn’t been quite where it needs to be in the back half of this series. I think we’re so used to Wood. If she ever had a bad shooting game, there would never be two in a row and even if she had poorer shooting patches in games she kept going to post in pressure moments.

As a Diamonds supporter I was slightly dismayed that NZ has finally recognised Burger as their best GD – particularly against Austin and that Heffernan is needed at WD 😉

@silverferns1 – re Toeava – it was ‘work ons’. Based on previous I would assume any of the following – knowing when to long bomb vs the need to keep passes shorter. Possibly also penalty count particularly on the line into the goal third where she is quite heavily penalised for running through in front.

Interesting the observation about Bruce – because she knows the crowd will absolutely let the umpires know whats going on? It was mentioned that NZ crowds are louder than any experienced in Australia which surprised me given the size of NZ arenas compared to the big ones over there. Personally I would have had Aryang at WD for starting 7. She’s really impressed me there given she is so new to the position.

I think Bruce is wasted against Nweke. You lose all the great intercepts and deflections that she normally gets. Klau at GK and Bruce at GD is probably a better combo when Nweke is playing. However, Weston did play pretty well.

It’s the flow of the ball that the Ferns struggle with. It flows much better when Toeava played.
Same as DNT, I’m big on fitness too. If players can’t make the standard fitness levels, then they deserve not to be selected.

I would have liked to have seen Weston – Klau. Bruce is the best defender in the world but sometimes you just need a change. Klau is a brilliant GK herself, Weston was doing the job at GD so Bruce should not be immune to coming off.

Woohoo, ferns going back to back against a full strength Diamonds is awesome!
I thought Maddy Gordon was incredible, and we have finally found a C who is equally good on Attack and Defence.
Nweke is next level, and I think most games from here on in will depend primarily on if Nweke can be contained (or partially atleast). Bruce looked frustrated and needs to come out for more ball higher up the court. when she did it was successful, but i think she gets caught up trying to win the 1on1 battle.
The energy in defence with KArin and Kelly is fantastic, Kelly seemed more on up and about on her toes than usual.
I was puzzled by Austin’s reluctence to shoot, because she nails long bombs in SSN. Wonder if Jury was in her head or if she’d been instructed by coaches to work it in closer? I haven’t noticed before how flast and low the release of her shot is…. Jury might trouble her for many years if she doesn’t change her style? Koenan isn’t a GA, so they need to explore more GA options. Missed opportunity.
Price has grown so much and was very impressive for me.
The diamonds have worked out how to defend the ferns in the mid court sooo well, it was so laboured and awkward watching the ferns try to reach the attacking third.those are my rambling initial thoughts.

Thanks for the insights @Maryann. But Toeava would’ve made a world of difference had she been out on court in the con-cup. Pitty the Ferns coaching staff can’t accept her playing style as it doesn’t fit their mould of bumper-cart style of play that doesn’t allow the expression of each player’s strengths. Sorry but if NZ Netball wants the funding and sponsorship, people aren’t going to watch boring netball, they want to watch fast, exciting, no-look passes being bulleted into Nweke from Toeava that no one saw coming. Toeava brings that entertainment x-factor stuff that people want. I don’t want to watch the ferns middies struggle to even make it into the goal-third let alone struggle to feed Nweke at times. How many times have you seen Nweke struggle to bring in so much ball in a game then last night? never because Toeava has that telepathic connection with Nweke. Just look at the outcry in the Ferns comment section from their NWC squad announcement and all the past Ferns players. PETITION FOR TOEAVA TO BE IN THE FERNS TEAM!!!

With Mila, Whitney and Maddy all able to play WA/C, Peta will not get back in the Ferns she is a 1 dimension WA.

I totally agree @mcleod I’d probably even play Tiana there as a back up ahead of Toeava, she would’ve been absolutely monstered by JLP and Aryang, the only reason she stood out last time was because she was up against Parmenter – on debut, and never really having played against the kiwi style of netball

A specialist WA is totally what the Ferns need. We don’t need 3 swing WA/C players that keep running over each other. What are they going to do when they bring back the short pass rule?

We took a specialist WA to the world cup, Crampton was a passenger.

                                  Crampton was the wrong choice
