I am happy the ferns won the 4th game but gosh it was painful watching the mid court trying to get the ball down to the goal third. The diamonds did it a whole lot easier. I am not sure what/where the problem is exactly. Is is inexperience with ‘young players’ who’d is mentioned a lot and is true or ? Maybe toeava would bring a bit of fresh air into the stagnant play that seems to occur. Even coming out for the centre pass, either there was no one or else 4 options all bunching up close. Looking forward to the January games !!
@Kerryn and @mcleod you probably were the ones saying high balls to Grace wouldn’t fly against Australia as Bruce trains against Fowler every week blah blah blah… Well Toeava kept Mila on the bench last year. We lost the Con-Cup 2022 because Toeava wasn’t there in Aus. If it isn’t clear to you that Toeava is a must, I’m not sure what will. DNT needs to give Toeava the opportunity overseas and then we will see who is laughing.
Toeava has let herself down between WC and now by not staying fit that is her fault no one else’s.
Agree with you @silverferns1 on Toeava. Such a shame she isn’t there as an impact player because of Taurua’s fitness card. It’s not like Taurua plays the same person at WA for a whole game these days anyway.
Will be interested to see if the Mystics take out the nz championship agai. Due to the Toeava-Nweke combination. Seems like such a long time away for next season!
@silverferns1 I’m on the Toeava bandwagon too. But you seem to be taking this personally
@kerryn you say Toeava only performed well cause she was up against Parmenter. And you think JLP and Aryang will have it all over her, but we are yet to see it.
It’s just as easy to say that Parmenter could have it over MRB or Souness, cause she’s just as fast as them. But we can’t say that, cause they haven’t played on each other yet.Re: Toeava – Diamonds also have some insanely fit change up WD options in Hadley and Moloney if Aryang, JLP etc aren’t working. That’s without going to Weston who can play there too. I just think against that type of opposition if there are fitness issues and loose play it is a big risk, even if there are moments of brilliance. When she played previously, I understand that she met those benchmarks?
I remember thinking while watching the 4th game that Nweke was allowed to push off more (I didn’t get as close a look in the 3rd game though) and the umpires allowed a bit less physicality. Diamonds seemed to adjust. What did others think?
Strongly agree Tully about some more GD development rather than just bringing Klau and Bruce forward.
Where does this series leave Wilson and her role in the SFs?
 :negative: jeepers creepers some of you need to sit, relax, breathe a bit, people are allowed their opinions, and don’t need other people ramming theirs down others throats – and @silverferns1 there is zero reason to be rude and say we’ve said things that we haven’t…now I know why I took a break from here – some people are just so obsessive about things and can’t just have a regular conversation with out getting their knickers in a twist — again I say – sit, relax, breathe
I wonder if Maia Wilson and Jane Watson have a future in the Ferns.
I was wondering the same thing. It seems Watson is either out of favour, carrying an injury or there for some kind of transition purpose? It is really odd.
I really feel for Wilson. Walmsley and Nweke are similar, so perhaps if she can get her form back she does give them more of a point of difference at GS.
@McLeod, I also wonder. Watson hasn’t imo shown her pre-surgery/pregnancy form since returning. I’m aware she had further small surgery pre ANZ season and then of course she had that further stress injury. Not sure if that’s still lingering. However with her locating to Wellington yet playing for Tactix and only training with them once during the week I can’t help feeling that she might be calling time to her International career. I can’t see this benefitting her game.
Wilson I really don’t know. I think she would benefit from 12 months away from netball. I can’t see her future as GS and if she’s no longer prepared to turn and go to the post GA won’t be for her either. Maybe a change of ANZ team might be good.- This reply was modified 1 year, 6 months ago by Maryann.
Wilson should head to SSN and try and market herself as a GS/GA swing like Cardwell. She would have been a good option for T’Birds next season. She’s not going to get selected for the Ferns anyway, so why not.
I also think it’s massively important that Ekenasio stays Ferns captain for as long as possible.
There are some pretty young players in the Ferns. Nweke, Mila R-B, Heffernan, Gordon, Walmsley, and even though Meels prob can’t play full back to back games, she needs to be there as Mother Hen for at least a couple more years or more.Hadn’t thought about that re Watson. If she were to step away from the Ferns, that’s an opening for either Burley or Stythe.
Re Wilson, I have also thought a year away from the game could be good. A move to Australia is interesting as well. Missed the boat completely? I think a new ANZP franchise could also be a good shout but no change before 2025.
