1/4 time: Eng 18-14
Sophie Garbin 11/15 (73%)
Steph Wood 3/5 (60%)Eleanor Cardwell 16/18 (89%)
Helen Housby 2/3 (67%)Not a secret game plan for England – control the middle on attack and defence, and double team Garbin. Such a simple strategy played with max intensity has given them a firm lead. Australia lucky to claw back from 9 down in the first quarter.
Add to that Cardwell being less predictable and having top accuracy, there’s the lead.

Bibs going everywhere with mass positional changes for Eng. Harvey on, Fadoju to Gd, Guscoth to WD, Allison to C. Basically how they were against Jamaica. Eng 27-24
Now Klau is on for Aryang. Bruce goes to GD.
Big changeup of attacking leads from both sides. For England we see Housby calmly being available for second phase out wide and then driving hard, with Cardwell allowing her space. New they change, Cardwell up the middle and Housby drives back. And change again, with a closed circle and Housby takes top, opening Cardwell at base.
For Aus, Wood has been taking Gusgoth on huge leads even up past the centre circle, and allowing Hadley or Watson the space to take ball circle edge and find one-on-one to Garbin. Fascinating. Must say, Garbin has made up for those missed shots in first quarter with some excellent foot control (right on baseline) and core stability in second quarter.
Klau is on GK and Bruce now GD.
Is Cardwell obstructing? She’s holding her arm up frequently (while pushing with the other arm, clever really) for 2+ seconds to signal for a pass “away from natural body position”. That should be obstruction, unless the wording of the rule has changed.

Halftime: Eng 32-31
Sophie Garbin 24/28 (86%)
Steph Wood 7/10 (70%)Eleanor Cardwell 22/24 (92%)
Helen Housby 10/12 (83%)Okay, just re-read obstruction rule and it doesn’t really help because you’re supposed to be penalised if
(1) you longer than momentarily signal for a pass or your next movement; BUT
(2) you use an arm away from natural body restriction to impede the movement of the oppositionSo just how long can a GS hold their arm up to signal the space? Sure, they don’t want their arm held down but it doesn’t impede the other player so…??
One of the improvements in second quarter for Aus, they got out from behind their player better, and then could read the England attacking passes, such that Bruce and Aryang did start to go for intercepts either from a player heading to backspace, or a player standing still with a slower ball (lob or bounce pass) heading in.
I think the change of Klau coming on loses nothing and Aryang wasn’t really doing anything wrong.
Austin on for wood
Well, that was something! From 34-40 to 48-41 in the space of 9 minutes!!!
3/4 time: Aus 48-41
Sophie Garbin 35/39 (90%)
Kiera Austin 5/6 (83%)Eleanor Cardwell 28/31 (90%)
Helen Housby 13/17 (76%)Okay, quarter three was truly topsy-turvy. England scored 8-3 to start, and then Australia scored 11-0. This seems almost impossible, but that’s what happened. FYI I’m typing this to stay awake as I eat my nachos.
I think a few things worked. Price came alive and got hands to the ball, causing England midcourt to be off balance and worried, and the ball simply didn’t get to the Roses shooters. Diamonds had 7 deflections and only three turnovers. England had 2 deflections but six turnovers. And that’s the story – built on defence.
Of course, Australia played better in attack to convert all those balls. I noticed that Austin took the first phase and Watson came over to the same side for second phase. It looks crowded, but then Hadley has MILES of space for the next pass, and Garbin has lots of time to consider her options eg hold or dodge or drive the middle. Didn’t hurt that Garbin shot 100% again (as she did in second quarter).
I think Guscoth HAS TO BE on the court. Even though Fadoju is a miracle, Guscoth is the best experienced defender now and that’s the better pairing.
I feel like Pitman has been very costly since coming on. The feeds just aren’t hitting
Austin featuring in a lot of good plays – an intercept in midcourt, good timing on her entries to the circle, and seeing a space between two England players to Garbin when eyes were down.
England are either exhausted or defeated. NB Bruce off with ?? ankle tweak. Aryang on.
Watson also cutting to circle edge wonderfully.Positionally Garbin is excellent, against Fran Williams (sent to bench) and Fadoju (now back on).
It’s now 58-48, so Pitman goes off and Metcalf back on.
I’d expect Garbin to get MVP with approximately 45/49.

Turnovers: 18-18Crazy game. Lots of good signs for England, but the Diamonds just a bit too good in the end. What a turnaround from being down 34-40 after 6 mins of the 3rd Q. They scored 16 of the next 17 goals! Wow.
