Simone McKinnis calls a timeout with Firebirds up 66-63 with 7 minutes left.
3 minutes left. Another timeout. Firebirds are up by 5 and have the next centre pass.
Full time: Firebirds 76-71
What a win! Well deserved.
POTM Donnell Wallam was outstanding. Wallam and Leesa Mi Mi had the two highest NNP scores in the team in First Nations Round. It had to be. Hannah Mundy was also incredible for Vixens.
Once again, the defensive duo of Kamo and RBD was tremendous. Kamo had 2 vital gains and 5 deflections in the final Q to give Firebirds the edge. Meanwhile, Vixens were unable to get hand to ball defensively when they really needed it late.
I think “good old Collingwood for two weeks” is the saddest celebratory song I’ve ever heard
As a Vixen’s fan I wanted them to win but I can’t be unhappy with Donnell and Leesa Mi Mi winning at their home venue in First Nations round.
Swifts are looking very dominant and must be favoured to win now. Fever, Vixens and Thunderbirds all looking a bit shakey.
Housby has had such an amazing season. Now that Mentor is coming into form and Cardwell has shown her dominance, the Roses starting 7 is beginning to look far more dangerous.
I think Price will pip Proud for the last spot in the 12, but Proud definitely deserves the last spot in the 15. Especially now that Moloney has been pushed back to WD at Vixens.
Mundy has come in leaps and bounds, it’s quite astonishing that she’s pushed Watson back to C and Eddy to the bench. I wonder if we’ll see Eddy move over to the 8th team next year.
I think Bakewell-Doran really deserves the last spot to NWC. The second season is often the hardest at the elite level when players start to work you out, but she’s been exceptional all season. Especially considering she hasn’t had the same protection around her as say Garrett has had. Aryang has been a bit quiet and Australia really needs a clean ball winner as a backup GD option. Wallam has also gone from strength to strength, which starts to really slim Garbin’s chances.
The Firebirds are going to have a lot of recruiting headaches when it comes to the Midcourt next year. Even if Simpson doesn’t retire, it’s starting to look like she won’t get offered a contract anyway.
Agree and disagree with a few points here, sure Housby is in terrific form but won’t have the luxury of Hadley and Proud at WC, or anyone near that standard.
I agree JLP and Wallam have to go, but disagree with your thoughts on Aryang, I think she’s going nicely, I for 1 would take herDoes anyone know when the diamonds team will be announced? Would love to see this team…
Shooters: Koenen, Wood, Austin, Garbin (despite poor SSN form, she is a proved GS at international level)
Midcourt: Watson, Hadley, Price, Parmenter.
Defence: Bruce, Klau, Weston, Garrett.
Reserves: Dwyer, Moloney, Aryang.Unlikely re Parmenter & Garrett, given Braz and Aryang but would love a point of difference and spark in squad.
Announced 15th of June on Centre Circle I believe, or could be the following week- round 14 anyway!
Vixens needed Kate Eddy at WD. She’s a much stronger player than Moloney IMO.
Watching Watson/Mundy combination, is like watching Tombs/O’Donnell. Very similar styles. I always thought Liz Watson played a similar style to Carissa Tombs, very steady and strong. Mundy following in her mother’s footsteps.Interesting to see who SM is going to select as her 4 shooters. If Garbin makes the cut, which I totally understand why, then form was never something considered.
Wallam, Dwyer and Glasgow (even though she’s now English) are in way better form.
If she is selected, that’s a lot of pressure on SM & Garbin. Cause if she doesn’t perform and they don’t win gold, surely questions will be asked on why Garbin was in there in the first place? While I agree with your point, SM has been very clear that there is more to selecting the team than just basing it off current form.
I think we will see both Garbin and Wallam in the 15, just not certain who will make the 12. I don’t think Dwyer is quite ready, but she is very close.
There is pressure on SM with every single selection and each one of them will be questioned if they don’t win Gold.
Question: Will all 15 players receive a medal if their team wins one? Even if they didn’t need to be used in the 12? (I would think so, but who knows?).
Is Glasgow ruled out for playing for Australia in the future?
I really hope for Garbin sake if she is selected in the 12, she can play a dominant and great games at GS proving to all doubters and SSN coaches that she deserved a starting GS position in the domestic league!!
Regarding the medals, I hadn’t thought about that. But personally, I would have thought that only those actually in the team of 12 or a reserve who gets to be in the team would get a medal. Could be wrong though.
Glasgow isn’t ruled out entirely of playing for Australia but it’s hard to see it happening now.
