New cycle, new faces ????
A 14-strong Vitality Roses squad, including seven potential debutants, has been named for the upcoming series vs. @SilverFernsNZ ????
ℹ Members of the Netball World Cup playing group and staff will take a planned break.

Surprising not to see Tchine with how little court time she got at WC, but I guess there’s still a heavy training and mental load with selection. Fingers crossed Fadoju or Williams gets to pull on the red dress later in the year.
Hopefully this series isn’t a washout considering the lack of experience and connections in the team- maybe NZ will go for a similar approach. Either way it will be great netball to watch and an experience to develop the future!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t ever remember a NZ/Aus team not taking their strongest players to a test series? No matter who they played.
From memory Nicole Cusack took a series off cause she was a bridesmaid for someone’s wedding. Sharelle McMahon took her place. Otherwise if a player was being rested, it was due to some injury.I understand a lot players have played a lot of netball this year. But why even commit to this series?
Ah yes the Caribbean tour of 1998… enter McMahon. She just took up residence.
I think there have been series where players were rested. Jo Weston missed the CC last year due to a wedding but then was called up for the Aussie leg when Aryang got injured. Pretty sure Watson & wood didn’t play England last year? Hence Hadley was captain.
But no I don’t recall every likely selection being rested at the same time.
I’d have to agree with everyone’s thoughts. While I am happy that they are exposing the upcoming players, I feel like Eng tends to throw player debuts up in the air.
This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to test Tchine and maybe bring back players such as Panagarry/Quashie into the group.
You never see Australia/NZ throw debuts like that at a test series especially against a Top 4 side.
Leota will coach the team with Sam
bird and Jo Harten.Thirlby will be back for the December series against South Africa.
England plays too many tests and they give away test caps a bit too easily. They seem to be basically treating this like a practice series.
TB, Australia and NZ have both taken under-strength teams away at times. Remember when Australia lost 3-0 over in England in 2013. That was a weakened team. But I don’t think they’ve ever rested the entire first choice 12 before. Not against a major nation. I don’t understand why Tchine and Fadoju aren’t playing at the very least.
And I agree, why commit to playing a test series if you’re only going to send your B team?
Such disrespect shown by England! I hope NZ flog them.
I’m so disappointed that Australia didn’t manage to keep Glasgow around, after this series it’s all sealed.
I actually think this is a really sensitive topic. The reality is that Australia and New Zealand(especially Australia!) simply have the depth of talent that everyone expects them to have. On the other hand, England definitely has the talent, but the players are probably not as well-known. For example, during the Australia vs England series last year, there was no Liz Watson or Steph Wood but there were Paige Hadley and Keira Austin left to fill their shoes. I don’t think anyone was particularly criticizing that Australian team though because we know that Hadley and Austin are world-class players who absolutely can fill up the shoes of others. However, IMHO, those who don’t really know much about the English players that were selected probably think that this is a B team, which is true to a certain extent, but I definitely don’t think that they’re bad!
Besides, it’s the start of a new cycle. If you don’t blood all these new players now then when? During the South Africa series? Will people then start saying that the Roses are cocky? Whilst, I also agree that we shouldn’t have picked an entirely new team, I don’t think they deserve the hate they are getting! Just some of my thoughts…
Well, well, this is a very inexperienced team.
@Ian I wouldn’t call it a B team. ImHO it’s weaker than that because they haven’t played together
@Schmeetle I wouldn’t say it’s disrespectful as I’m sure resting NWC players would have been mentioned when the series was planned/agreed.
@CNC I agree with you. All of the players selected are part of the wider Roses squad, and therefore need to be exposed/tested against the NZ style. 4 of them were part of the post Covid NZ tour.
Tchine and Funmi, should they have been selected?? My initial thoughts were   but then I remembered they were part of the VNSL finals this year, for the first time. So they probably need a break.
On a different thread someone mentioned that Walmsley will probably debut against ENG. Chances are she’ll be partnered by Metuarau, who was named as a NWC reserve. How is this different from SDL and Glasgow?
Personally what I find disrespectful is the head coach not travelling with the squad :negative:
Does anyone know if these games will be available to watch in Australia?
I guess England saw the merits in what Jamaica pulled last year, and that they got away with sending a training squad, so why not?
Or they reckon this way it might actually be close games given the way we played at NWC w/o grace.
May as well throw Walmsley out for all 3 games to start, get peta to feed her. Same same but different. -
