mcleod, they were simply obliged to send a senior representative team. There’s nothing that says how strong it has to be. But Wyllie said that clearly the weren’t expecting a team with no WC players in it.
There’s an article on Stuff from Brandon Egan and there’s one part where Jennie Wyllie says “It will be really interesting to see if this English team does live up to their own perceptions of them being the future and an exciting crop of talent…
“Why don’t we critique England and ask them about the calibre of the players they are bringing [during the games] and let’s see if they are what they make them out to be.”
I personally feel that this taking this a bit too far? The players selected for the Roses aren’t the ones to blame and honestly, it should be England Netball that takes the blame. Really feel for the players and hope they don’t see such comments because it’s honestly so hurtful and it’s obvious Netball New Zealand feel that this squad is simply a development squad:( I definitely understand why they would feel this way as they have never seen all of these players before but still feel it’s just really undermining these player’s abilities IMHO…

Undermining? What’s undermining is sending a B team to an international test series. I really don’t know how anyone can justify this?
If NZ did this to England, I would be expecting the England media to go full ham on them. I would also be calling out NZ (which is my team), and thinking how disrespectful this is.
The top level players get scrutinised by the media, public etc if they don’t perform. This B team can not think everything is going to be all “roses” for them? What, just because they’re not expected to perform?
TB, I definitely get your frustrations and as I said previously, England really should have added more players such as Fadoju and Tchine to balance out the squad. All I’m saying is that the ones that should be held accountable are England Netball, and at the moment from what I can see (based on social media), there seems to be a lot of hate for the players for just being selected. England Netball really needs to sort out their communication and this is really unacceptable…
I will stand by my opinion that is by no means a B-squad and I guess we can agree to disagree about this squad’s calibre of players. I will definitely once again like to say that I can completely understand where both sides are coming from and I’m just really feeling for both sides.
I can see in the near future, Netball NZ not hosting any games, except for Con cup. I’d be happy for that to happen.
A team that does not feature, not even 1 player, from their WC campaign IS a B team. No matter how you look at it.
Yes England Netball are the ones to be held accountable. But let’s be real, that’s not going to happen (I’m talking in relation to the social media hate). It’s always going to be the players that cop it. Same as if England won the WC, the players will get the praise too. It goes both ways.
And how much can even be read into these games, with the team England named? If England get thrashed, well that’s predictable. If NZ don’t dominate but still win……………….were they even trying? Did they give up after half time?
I’m predicting NZ will want to come out strong, and so they should.
Most England fans are excited by this squad because our CWG squad was a disaster and that NWC silver win was because we had an easy ride to the semis and played a NZ that is suffering the same issues as England: WA, GA and C are the big weak spots. Both sides have excellent defensive units, but no matter how much ball is won, its getting the goals that’s a struggle. Yes Nweke was injured, but what if that happens again? Considering both NZ and Eng went into last cycle as CWG and NWC title holders, the results for 2022/3 are hardly a justification that they way both teams have bought through new players has worked for them. England has had a lot of retirements and frankly there should be more. Why send a squad of only 56 caps to NZ and not against SA? Maybe it’s because New Zealand play a particular style and where else where our players get a taste of this? Especially when the WYC was cancelled due to covid. Do you not think your young players should be getting a focus too? This Roses squad isn’t a 7 player Jamaica, it’s a squad of players many feel should have been in our WC squad, its a squad that actually has WAs that don’t play GA and C that aren’t aged 40 or don’t play C in the NSL. No one expected a pandemic would close the Netball world for 2 years, that could happen again. England twice took a squad to NZ during the Pandemic made up of NSL players, one of which won the Series. Were they rubbish to watch? To say that England saw the Jamaica series and thought we’d just send a development team is quite offensive given the sacrifices England staff and players made to travel to NZ in 2020 and 2021. As for the headcoach not being there? Well a majority of England fans don’t even want her in the job. I’m genuinely surprised NZ fans are letting themselves be sucked into the bad-mouthing of the England Squad rather than asking what the SF response is to ensure in this new cycle you are picking up golds and trophy’s because the current plan certainly hasn’t worked.
56 tests and 23 of those from SDL. Im sure there are some great players individually but the lack of senior leadership will be interesting come game day.
@ Bluebird I always thought ENG had a less pressured run to semis. Out of interest how many of the Roses squad are Captains?
Former England centurion not surprised by Roses side to tour NZ

Disappointing but not totally surprising. The SSN players from the World Cup were never coming, heck during covid they didn’t come through to NZ from Australia. Best to look at these games like the cream of those in the English Domestic vs the best NZ can field from their competition. I’d be wary of thinking the Ferns will take this series and it’s the best chance Netball NZ is going to get to see the players the Ferns will most likely face in the next Commonwealth Games and Workd Cup.
The disappointing part is the fact that England Netball was not open about their planned rest period to Netball NZ. Perhaps given the Jamaica debacle NZ should have had the foresight to ask – let’s hope that now they’ve been bitten twice they ask next time.NZ team for Taini Jamison Trophy:
