3/4 time: England 43-36
Now it’s Cardwell on the buzzer with a beauty!
Thankfully, the stadium lighting has improved. Also an improved showing from the Proteas in the 3rd Q as they looked to eat into the margin until that last second goal settled things for England.
Full time: England 54-51
Some positives to take away for the Proteas after a spirited fightback in the final quarter, but the Roses just managed to hold on.
There was no doubt that England looked better in attack when Cardwell was on court.
POTM: Imogen Allison
ENGLAND:
Cardwell 34/38 (89%)
Neil 10/12 (83%)
Glasgow 6/8 (75%)
Tchine 4/5 (80%)
TOTAL: 54/63 (86%)SOUTH AFRICA:
Venter 38/42 (90%)
Maseko 11/14 (79%)
Taljaard 2/2 (100%)
TOTAL: 51/58 (88%)Cardwell, Alison and Williams were all terrific for England. The Roses can build a formidable team around that trio.
For South Africa, Venter was strong up front. Her combination with Maseko grew as the game went on and started to look dangerous.
That’s a close game. I’m interested in knowing how the Cardwell/Glasgow combination went?
Add in Housby and that’s a very strong shooting end.The Cardwell and Neil combo was a lot smoother. I found Cardwell and Glasgow have similar playing styles and found them in each other space, would love to see Glasgow in GS.
SA played better without Msomi, would love to see them develop their mid court when the big trio retire at the end of the year.
Glasgow has had so much experience in recent times playing with Fowler and Cardwell is a completely different player. It didn’t seem to work that well in this game, but that doesn’t mean the two of them won’t play well together in future.
Lots of changes for SA. No Venter. She’s being rested.
1/4 time: 16-16
ENG:
Cardwell 8/8
Neil 8/10RSA:
Streutker 10/11
Maseko 6/6Great opening quarter. The Proteas started slowly but really built into it and took a 2 goal lead late before a turnover allowed the Roses to level.
The GK position is still very much up for grabs for the Roses. Adio has been cautioned in just 1 quarter of netball. Williams and Fadoju are definitely more comfortable playing out in GD. Wonder if Thirlby has the confidence to back in Pechova? She hasn’t really had the time to develop on court. Also, that’s 3 cautions for the Roses. They have to tidy up!
1/2 time: SA 34-30
ENG:
Cardwell 18/18
Neil 12/14RSA:
Streutker 25/26
Maseko 9/9Good quarter for South Africa. Quick ball movement had them gaining the upper hand. Streutker has been very impressive. She missed her first attempt and has landed 25 straight since.
Imogen Allison left the court in some pain in the 2nd quarter. Hopefully, she is okay.
3/4 time: SA 47-42
ENG:
Cardwell 26/26
Neil 16/18
Glasgow 0/0RSA:
Streutker 35/37
Maseko 12/12Great game. South Africa just on top, but the Roses fighting back now in the 4th Q
South Africa win!! Wonderful game of netball to watch! The South African GS was very very impressive- literally unstoppable. England did a great job coming back but the defence end still has many questions for me. The Cardwell-Glasgow combo worked so much better today. Can’t wait for game 3!
Full time: RSA 61-59
Unsurprisingly, Rolene Streutker was chosen as the POTM. 49/51 and as solid as a rock for the whole game. South Africa looked like getting the wobbles in the last quarter and it was neck and neck until Pretorius came up with a crucial play late.
ENGLAND:
Cardwell 38/39 (97%)
Neil 16/18 (89%)
Glasgow 5/5 (100%)
TOTAL: 59/62 (95%)SOUTH AFRICA:
