GK Nawai-CaucauUganda off to a good start in the first quarter! They are struggling to penetrate the NZ zone defence though.
1/4 time:
New Zealand 13 v Uganda 11
(Tough close battle, Uganda has had more attempts so far!)Zimbabwe 14 v Fiji 12
(Another great tussle, Fiji just making a couple more errors)1/2 time:
New Zealand 25 v Uganda 21
(NZ just edged in front, but Uganda giving it everything – shooting accuracy the difference)Zimbabwe 25 v Fiji 26
(Barely anything to pick between these two teams – what a great game)This Fiji shooting combo is great to watch, very creative ball use and great accuracy.
Once again, scores very similar in both games, with one team starting to skip away.
Fiji up 39-31, NZ up 38-31
3/4 time:
New Zealand 38 v Uganda 32
(NZ has won each Q by 2 against a tenacious Ugandan team)Zimbabwe 35 v Fiji 43
(Fiji really put the foot down in that quarter – playing well)Great win by Fiji, commentators implying they only won because the Zimbabwe coach wouldn’t stop doing musical chairs with positional changes but that does Fiji a disservice, I think.
I actually think that tight tussle for the ferns is what they needed. And it’s nice to see Uganda pushing for a higher rank.
Whilst I can see many criticise the score line, that NZ should have won that by more- I think this will pay dividends deeper into the tournament. I thought the attack was slick, again I think defence isn’t picking enough ball.
Full time: New Zealand 54 v Uganda 44
A solid all round display but the Silver Ferns survived a real scare to win by 10, a narrower margin than many would have expected. Shooting accuracy was a big difference as Uganda had just one less attempt.
Jane Watson is having a slow start to the tournament. Karaka has started strong however.
Full time: Fiji 52 v Zimbabwe 48
This is a surprise result.
Zimbabwe came back in the last quarter, but the damage had already been done by that terrific 3rd quarter from Fiji.
Unaisi Raulini a well deserved MVP. She was tremendous.
