They may only be playing for positions 13 to 16 but these Group E games are proving to be great entertainment. Fresh from winning a tense struggle against Sri Lanka yesterday, Singapore is battling it out with Barbados today. And it’s 40-40 at 3/4 time!
Check it out.
Full time – Barbados 55 def Singapore 50
The experience of the Corbin sisters and Latonia Blackman has allowed Barbados to eventually pull away to a 5 goal win over a plucky Singapore team. Good game!
Malawi defender Loreen Ngwira has just left the court with a foot/ankle injury. Hopefully it’s not too serious.
Malawi putting on a great show here. The score at 1/4 time was only 16-13 to Australia, and now the Diamonds lead 25-22 in Q2.
This could be a top 4 game, Malawi are applying amazing pressure and the Diamonds are not clinical at all. Would like to see Weston on for Australia and maybe Price. Lwazi is owning Paige Hadley right now and Klau isn’t having much impact.
Malawi tied 28 all with Aus at HT!! Mvula had a chance to go 1 up from range on the buzzer but sadly not to be.
Aus’ first quarter goal loss of the tournament, Lwazi continuing to build her credentials for potential player of the tournament honours and Vinkuhmbo with a fantastic block towards the end of Q2.
Have a feeling subs and fresh legs will end up shifting momentum for Aus in Q3, but what a glorious upset it would be if Malawi can keep it going!
I would like to see Weston on at GD and Aryang at WD. I’m not sure that the attack needs changing, just some good instruction at half time. I would rather see them work things out in the second half as good preparation in a tight game.
Vinkhumbo has been all over Koenen and already on a caution. Malawi will need to be careful about that in the second half.
Agree Klau is not overly effective at GD. Defence isn’t winning enough ball back and the Diamonds just look slower and less organised than Malawi.
Malawi playing very well and this could be a repeat of when they beat NZ the way this is going!
UPSET ALERT!!!
Malawi is level with Australia at half time! The score is 28-28. The Queens are putting absolutely everything into this and the Diamonds just look flat.
Whatever the Malawian President said to the team a few days ago… it sure has worked!
Diamonds front end looks way smoother with Garbin, she just looks much easier to feed than Koenen.
A few team changes from the Aussies have worked and they won that 3rd Q convincingly (21-9) to take a 49-37 lead at 3/4 time. Sophie Garbin a real game changer with 17/20 in that Q.
Garbin should start the next match.
Best lineup at this stage is easily Garbin, Wood, Watson, Hadley/Price (don’t mind which, neither have done much wrong), Brazill, Weston, Bruce.
I’m very pleased with this game. Strong challenge for Australia and they really had to work for it. Now they get a day off before England.
Full time: Australia 70-46
A great tussle. Australia gradually got on top of a committed Malawi team. The Diamonds ran away with things in the second half, winning both quarters 21-9. Steph Wood was MVP while Sophie Garbin was a big part of the team’s turnaround.
