TBH I’m not sure Fisher will be back at this level. That second surgery removed all cartilage so how she’s going to protect/cushion that knee joint at this level is going to be interesting if she does return.
Re Fifita, shes not any where near the player she was pre her Mission year. She’s a lot slower and heavily penalised. Lawson and Strydom formed a strong moving defensive unit, assisted well by Savai’inaea. For the Steel I think there’s the potential to pick up one of Bird Dunn, Salmon or Walmsley to build their shooting circle around.
Defensively Kate Lloyd would be a great grab but I think she’s happy to sit behind Burger and Watson and work full time in Christchurch. The Steel need height. Perhaps even Catherine Hall? Kelea Iongi?
I think Hall should stay at Mystics as Phoenix will be on Maternity leave soon (she said publicly she wants baby no.2 soon and to go to NWC 27).
Makes you wonder why Taurua doesn’t play Watson at GD more often with Burger at WD with Kelly at GK. I personally think that’s NZ’s strongest defensive lineup. Worked great at quad series at 2023 against Aus and can only imagine what more regular court time could do for that defensive trio. Last time NZ won the constellation cup was with Jane Watson at GD!
6 ANZ teams, having one strong post shooter in each. Bird, Dunn, Nweke, Salmon, Tui & Walmsley.
If Salmon doesn’t get a contract for Pulse, she could be a great fit at either Steel or Stars. Wilson and her could easily swing with GS/GA, add in Malesala for variety.
Ekenasio is in great form, but I do wonder how much longer she’s got? I thought she wanted to do a year in the SSN before retiring? (I could be making that last one up, but I swear I read that somewhere)
Actually maybe Steel doesn’t deserve her. How come she wasn’t used much with them? How did they miss this talent? She’s totally dominating.
Such a shame for Fisher, perhaps Steel might try and get Fowler back!!
I do like our NZ comp, but it’ll be a massive step backwards for Fowler to go back to Steel. Can’t see it happening.
Namana played GA in NSL all season and was great. I don’t understand why she isn’t playing GA for Steel. It’s such hard work to get the ball into the circle it’s no wonder accuracy drops off as they are tiring earlier than necessary.
Yeah, Martina has some serious talent. Another sad recent loss for Queensland netball, but it seems she’s made the right move for herself and her career. The Firebirds are an appalling mess and the Lightning roster is jam packed, especially with shooting. (Koenen, Fretwell, Batcheldor and Charlie Bell).
As for the poster who suggested Martina would have been good pickup for the Giants instead of Harten – well yeah, I agree but that’s just not how Julie Fitz rolls. When you’re one of her inner circle you don’t leave until retirement and Harten would have to be first among equals. Sammy Saunders, JLP and Harten all still play for her and they were on that Magic team EIGHT years ago. Manu’a got her first SSN contract with the Giants when she went across the ditch as well.
Not coming through the NSW pathways and not being a Julie Fitz intimate Martina had as much chance at a Giants contract as I do. And I’m fat, forty five and male.
@silverferns1 i love that combo too i think it was used maybe once in the Quad series once Jane was back from having baby, alot of the commentators said they prefer Watson at GK as she has more time to defend the ball coming down the court but from memory she spend the little of 2020 season at GD.
