She does offer something that the rest of the GAs don’t have, and that’s speed. Put her in with a very strong GS (Nweke) and an extremely clever WA (Toeava), she could be a perfect link.
She’s not in my top 3 for GAs, but we all know DNT loves a fit player. No question, Ekenasio is the best GA option for the Ferns.
Second best is unclear, though I’d go for G Heffernan, for her fitness, volume and willingness to shoot long.
I think Vui and Malesala are up there, too.
Metuarau has good court craft but low volume, and seems prone to fitness/injury issues.
Interesting comments re G Heffernan as a good option with respect to fitness. I haven’t watched the ANZP this year, but have followed the results on this forum. The persistent comment from those watching has been that she does not do the work in defence. That sounds fairly unacceptable for a possible SF GA? Is it a reflection of a lack of fitness or is she dropping her head and not bothering?
G Hef has been pretty much the only shooter this year that I constantly yell at through the tv to ‘just shoot to the f’n ball’ she is a perfectly capable mid/long range shooter, yet the constant in out, in out (only to end up in the same position she started at, and putting so much pressure on the middies) won’t work at international level, most defence will snap that up…I’ve always quite liked her, but to me she hasn’t shown this year that she’s a SF’s shooter
(just my opinion, which we all have, and it’s okay if they differ from each others)
Nothing worse than shooters who don’t follow through for rebounds. G Heffernan has just stood there after putting up a shot, I think I only saw her once follow through determined for the rebound. But she is far from the only one.
Vui – if it wasn’t for her I doubt the Mystics would even be playing off for a place in the finals. Very underrated and imo she carried the Mystics shooting circle while Grace was unavailable. However she is another who does not follow through for rebounds, something that needs working on.
Metuarau, I don’t like the way she plays, she is also quite heavily penalised for contacts and has been spoken to a number of the few games she has played. I doubt she will make the fitness standards required even if they are eased off.
I find G Heffernan overrated. She did pretty well for SFs in Jan but shooting at 76.8% for a team that’s dead last in the comp doesn’t scream Silver Fern. I think NZ are in really dire straits at GA in the coming years. No one comes close to the dynamism/fitness of Ekenasio. Vui and Malesala are fine but not really intl’ standard.
G Heffernan 95% of the time if the ball is turned over in or near the shooting circle, just stands there, and looks either at the ground, the umpire or nothing, no movement to even try and defend. While 33yr old world class Ekenasio does everything to try and win the ball back.
Heffernan G looks like she can’t be bothered even trying. She shouldn’t even be near getting in the Ferns, but I bet she does, just because she can do lots of burpees and yo-yo at a Dame Noel’s clipI wonder if Saviour Tui is a SF option at GA? I don’t think she’s played there in ANZ this season, with Ekenasio out front, but could be worth a look, when there isn’t a real standout backup GA.
She’s tall, strong, and seems to move pretty well, with good shooting % also…
Agree G Heffernan has some areas she can improve her game, but i think the potential is there.
She hasn’t had the benefit of playing with international caliber teammates in ANZ, other than her sister, and Shannon Saunders for maybe 1 game?
The real test will be how she goes in a team of the best.
Steel have a relatively short shooting circle (compared to the rest of the teams). They don’t have that target shooter to let them off the hook. In this day-in-age it’s almost suicidal not to have one. And I think G Heffernan would thrive having a target shooter.
Hopefully next season they can recruit one. It almost seems ridiculous that you have Dunn/Bird and Salmon/Walmsley sitting in the same teams. I know injuries played a part in it, but would like to see these tall players evenly spread out.If the rumours are true that Nweke is heading to the SSN, there would be an opening at Mystics too.
Wow that’s pretty interesting that rumour about Nweke going to SSN. I hadn’t heard that! That will be great for her game and to come up against Bruce and Sterling etc. Would be interesting to see how she rates against Fowler, Aitken, Wallace and Koenan.
I sincerely hope Taurua doesn’t select players on their fitness level like she has in the past. Surely shooting percentage and form must come into it. I didn’t think it was a good move reappointing Taurua because of her selection criteria. I’m not really interested in the England series. Their players are not very interested in a series down here after a long SSN season. I will be watching the Nz-Aussie games though🤪
The one shooter none of us have talked about is Maia Wilson. Would not be surprised if she makes the Ferns, at least for one of the series as back-up GA to Ekenasio.
@kwkiwi, please watch the Ferns/Roses series ♡ netball still needs all the support it can get. The Roses are interested in playing in NZ, don’t forget we had a very large number of retirements. We only have 3 players in SSN, technically this series will test the calibrator of both our leagues
I don’t think Grace will be the only player leaving Mystics… I have no inside knowledge it’s just that she didn’t look very happy at the weekend. Neither did MSB, Karaka or Stythe.
I wonder if Stars will persuade Walmsley back then Maia can play GA.
Salmon will make the SF development squad and she’ll start playing GA too.
I hope Stythe changes teams I feel like she hasn’t developed this year.
I also hope Fisher does come back, this is her first major injury.
