Nice to see some positive comments for the pulse for a change.
I like all your comments but I would like to add I think Anna (coach) has learnt off YMD on the way she trusts her players
and has the bye in to play for each other.

Anna Andrews-Tasola seems very calm and down to earth, keeps the message simple. Plus will have good existing relationships with the players. Doesn’t hurt Pulse have Wai Taumaunu and Sandra Edge chipping in too, and now Vicki Wilson.

Steel are a bit light on circle defence unfortunately, lacking a consistent ball winner.

Good to see them win the last quarter at least.

I notice Jennifer O’Connell wasn’t on the team sheet – is she injured?

Jane Watson looks to be playing back into top form, after a quieter/injury affected 2023.

Based off of performance, my Silver Ferns defenders would be Burger, Jury, Mason, Watson. Reserve being Karaka.

I would like to see a change to the in circle defence for the Ferns too. You would argue the form of the Tactix and Pulse combinations is too strong to ignore and Karaka is unlucky.

Midcourt wise it will be interesting as well. I imagine Gordon could sit out the rest of the ANZP and Taurua would still pick her because she trusts her fitness. Souness selects herself, her form has been sublime to start the ANZP season. Heffernan will also get the nod but I hope it’s for WD not C. I would personally go with Poi over MRB but am intrigued if Taurua sees it the same. I also think she will be keeping an eye on Toeava and how she continues to feed a moving circle in Nweke’s absence. Does it all hinge on her performance in a bronco?

Shooting circle wise it might be a battle of who is left standing. Again, Nweke could be out the rest of the ANZP season and I would still pick her. Ekenasio gets the nod too of course. Perhaps Tui will be the big benefactor of her combination with Ekenasio. Georgia Heffernan for that back-up GA bib?

Is Walmsley out for 8 weeks?
If so, this should give Martina Salmon some good court time to show what she can do. That ball looked to go in much easier, than with Walmsley. I’m not discounting her in any way, it just appeared the ball was moving so much smoother with Salmon in there.

My Silver Ferns fourth mid court spot would have to be Toeava hands down, pending her fitness but she’s surely going to be fit by the end of the season given she’s doing the extra work with a moving circle. Poi isn’t a WA IMO and we already have two great Centres (we need a back-up WA). MRB isn’t at the international standard yet; Ferns struggled in the centre third last year in ConCup. Ferns were much better with Whitney in WA than MRB.

My 4 shooters would be Ekenasio, Malesala, Nweke, Tui. Reserve being Walmsley.

Taurua talks about the midcourt being the engine room. The commentators also mentioned players playing C but not having the lung capacity to play C for a full game.
In my selection, I’d expect the midcourters to be able to play C and at least one other position. Especially as injuries seem more common than usual. Just my 2c.

I do think we need a WA specialist – and we need the best one we have on hand. IMO is Toeava.
A lot of work/time has been put into Souness. And her current form warrants a place in the Ferns. Heffernan seems to be an automatic selection.
I am a fan of Tayla Earle, and I thought her outing with the Ferns was really good. She has a connection with Nweke. So she would be my fourth pick.

@Baller I think series versus pinnacle events allows Taurua more flexibility to have a specialist WA. And we know she will happily flex that as well – remember for CWG our starting midcourt pairing for knockout games was Crampton at WA and Souness who hadn’t played C in years.

I’d actually be happy to see Gordon back-up in WA for the Ferns versus WD. I think she’s too clumsy on the challenge and gets pinged a lot on defence, whereas at WA her speed and change of direction are really valuable. Need I remind everyone WA is where she burst onto the scene for the Pulse 2019(ish).

I think we can probably all agree Gordon (fitness pending), Heffernan and Souness are lock midcourt selections. It’s really if Taurua wants versatility – Earle, MRB or Poi – or a specialist – Toeava for that last spot.

No Eke in the starting lineup and Wilscher not even in the team list.

Ekenasio isn’t in the 10 either. Glad I tipped Mystics ????

Champion data has her listed in the team but not Magic instagram.

Oh dear, it was the same with other players who were injured.
