KD should really be on during the power 5 defending those shots
1/2 time: Firebirds 41-39
Exciting game. For the second quarter in a row, Wallam, who’s having a big game, nails a super shot in the final seconds and this gives the Firebirds a surprise half time lead.
Gains: FEV 3-1
Penalties: FIR 21-20
Turnovers: 8-8Lots of criticism of the umpire in that first half took me a bit by surprise
I think Fever have a defence problem. Dehaney has had one good game all season against the tbirds. She’s very inconsistent, which has been her problem her whole career. She doesn’t contest high balls, she just lets them go over her head. She’s flat-footed most of the time. She’s great at the lean over the shot but that’s about it. Fran Williams is great but she’s a GD. She’s too short to defend the tall holding shooters. So Fever have two great GDs. If only Ellis had hung around.
The criticism of the umpire is her tone when speaking to the players, which I think is fair.
This umpire had a poor game last week, barely had control of the game so maybe some feedback has been that she needs to be more commanding, but it’s coming across as stroppy and rude.
3/4 time: Firebirds 57-51
Again Wallam hits an incredible shot to end the quarter, but this one doesn’t count. It’s been a tremendous performance from the Firebirds so far. Can they hold on?
Gains: FEV 6-4
Penalties: FEV 38-35
Turnovers: FEV 15-12Okay this is purely speculation from myself. But I’m thinking the issues in this FBirds team was Wallam v Bulley. And the club decided to side with Wallam. It’s the only explanation I can create, to explain Wallams brilliant form in this game (so far).
If Firebirds CAN play like, why haven’t they been doing it? Even given they’ve got rid of their coach?? They are professional athletes after all?
Kadie-Ann Dehaney has been suspended for 2 minutes following a high challenge on Macy Gardner. Firebirds lead by 4.
Firebirds up 67-63 with 6 1/2 minutes left as Firebirds call a time out. Every goal is so vital now for both teams.
Firebirds win!!! It’s the upset of the year!
What was that last call against Williams? Contact?
Full time: Firebirds 78-70
After all the events of the last couple of weeks, this is just an incredible result. The Firebirds players and coaching staff are overcome with emotion. And they deserved this win. The POTM is Donnell Wallam. It could be nobody else.
Key part of this game is giving Shearer a full game. She will remember this investment in her and it will keep her at the club next year.
Yes an offensive contact. Bit of a shoulder but I don’t think there was a lot in it.
Some weird umpiring calls for both sides today, but I think it’s unfair for Fever fans on Instagram to blame the umpires for the loss. Lack of accuracy and discipline lost it.
Good on the Firebirds, I’m glad they aren’t treating this period as a write-off.
