Swifts definitely playing box defence and focusing on the middle channel, they either float off or totally congest it. I think at the moment the Fbirds are taking advantage of the wide and open player quite well and Moore has rolled off or driven with good timing. Must be tough with those lanky defenders reaching over the shot.

Palavi’s ball handling speed is very impressive, and she’s economical with the moves. No lobs, good to see.

Interested to see if Proud can calm down or Veve will keep taking advantage of her hyperactivity. And will Firebirds do better screening for each other on the shot.

So let me get this right, you would be happy to re sign McDonnell, Personally I would be searching for at least a GK to help Ward out, and if Harten did choose to retire a replacement shooter,
Whilst other teams are probably choosing to bolster their squads for next year to challenge TBirds, Vixens etc, I personally wouldn’t be satisfied with a team that won only 3 games

          1/4 time: Swifts 19-15

A fast-paced game with Swifts having the edge for most of the quarter. No Wallam means Firebirds have to find another way to score, and they struggled early on to adjust to that.

          Gains: SWI 3-2
          Penalties: FIR 15-9
          Turnovers: 3-3

What is this with keeping Proud on? She’s thrown two intercepted passes in this Q alone! I notice her footwork is wrong, not very fluid at all. Can’t tell if it’s the taped knee or not, either way, just make a change please Briony!

Dunkley’s also not doing well but I think that’s more Turner outplaying her and the Fbirds shooters struggling with leads.

Fawns is sent to warm up, but that’s not where the problem is.

Some of these short passes (not just in this game) don’t really seem like short passes to me per the rule. Isn’t it that a defender could feasibly attack the space?

                  1/2 time: Swifts 33-32

A poor start to Q2 from Swifts. Firebirds outscored them 10-3 to take the lead before Swifts steadied. Palavi is having a great 2nd game. For Firebirds, Gardner has 13 assists.

                  Gains: FIR 6-5
                  Penalties: FIR 29-24
                  Turnovers: SWI 9-6

I would bring on Gorman-Brown for a bit and let Proud watch from the bench. She’s just a bit hyperactive and impulsive right now. Might also look to shift Turner back to GD and bring Smith on, the Swifts don’t really need the talls for this match.

Swifts’ transition has been atrocious, in particular Klau. So much great work, particularly from O’Shannassy that has been wasted.

Gosh it’s really hard going for the Firebirds up front. Dwan looks stuffed and they’re having to make ten times as many passes than the Swifts to even get into the circle.

                          3/4 time: 49-49

We’re all locked up with 15 minutes to go. This really could go either way. So little to pick between the teams. Will Palavi be Swifts’ hero or will the new Firebirds shooters prevail?

                          Gains: SWI 10-7
                          Penalties: FIR 42-35
                          Turnovers: SWI 14-9

Fawns is on in place of Palavi and she sinks a super shot to give Swifts a 58-55 lead with 4 minutes left. Firebirds will almost certainly need to land a few of their own.

Wow!! Firebirds!!! That was the sort of win that makes a team. Pure guts, they should be SO proud.

Emily Moore take a bow. What a performance. Gardner was also exceptional.

The Swifts just haven’t been as composed this year as they have been previously. I’m sure they just want this season to be over at this point.

                                  FIREBIRDS WIN!!!

                                  Full time: Firebirds 61-60

What a game. Swifts looked like they had it in their grasp, but an incredible effort from the new shooting combo to get them over the line in the dying seconds. POTM was Macy Gardner. 22 assists and SIX pickups!
