Kristiana Manu’a named as Lauren Moore’s replacement! Didn’t see that one coming.

O’Shannassy still out but looks like she’ll be back soon.

I didn’t see the Manu’a move coming either, but I think it should be good for them. An experienced change up for the back line.

Experience wise, she’s a great pickup. But that defence end is lacking height. Her and Lewis won’t be much of a change up, they’ll be replacing one shorty (GK terms) with another one.

Re Giants: like what everyone else has said, I hope they start with Dwyer/Leatherbarrow. They played great together in the preseason games. They had better connection with the middies too. Jo would be a great impact player.
I’m not saying the midcourt don’t have their issues. But when you have a very strong and experienced midcourt, and they can’t connect with the shooters. I don’t think the answer is pulling a shooter out to WA, who has never played there before. Surely it doesn’t take a genius to realise the shooting circle is NOT working?

                    1/4 time: Lightning 15-13

A good competitive opening Q. Lightning was off to a good start and has generally had the better of the quarter, but Mavs fighting back to be just 2 down. Molly Jovic is just everywhere for them. she has 8 assists.

Mavericks looking the best they’ve been all season. Heavily penalised though.

Tara Hinchliffe is on for Ash Ervin. Bruce goes to GK. Meanwhile, Jovic continues to star for Mavs with 11 assists already. Lightning 26-24 as Sinclair comes on.

Katrina and I are here at USC for a Netball Scoop reunion – it’s been years!

The rest of the opinions herein are mine alone hahahaha.

I feel like the SCL line is playing like an away team. Despite the incredible experience of Watson and Bruce, the game plan isn’t thoroughly stuck to throughout the game. Mavs have a different problem, they seem too fired up – two coaches that possibly are so amped and inspiring and players trying to hard. Nankivell is playing too much with athleticism and not brains. The first quarter wasn’t that great from either team.

Lewis was pretty good at covering Koenen as SCL tried to get Cara 1-on-1, it’s definitely a strength of Koenen, but she was better if sometimes she just did a really strong solid front hold that didn’t necessarily lead to a shot, allowing Fretwell to join her and use that amazing shooter-to-shooter connection. Watson has at times been the perfect icing on the cake with that uncanny and economical drive to circle edge between three defenders.

Second Q is a lot more calm, and actually a bit boring, but they’re both ticking over the goals. Good to see what Manu’a can do….

I’m still frustrated by Jok after all these years. That footwork, sheesh!

Irvin was playing pretty well, I’m speculating that her sit-down is to get even more mobility for power-5. There doesn’t look like any special coaching going on there.

Expect Irvin to be invited to Diamonds camps. She’s the largest GK we’ve had in Aus for a while, and that stature combined with the mobility is needed in world netball.

Agree Ervin should be in the Diamonds setup. She’s got great mobility and timing for someone so tall, too. Playing with Bruce will be good for her development.
