1/4 time: Mavericks 19-13
A very strong first Q from Mavs with just two turnovers compared to Firebirds’ four and 95% shooting compared to 77%.
Another year of average feeds into Wallam.
The Jok/Cardwell combo is proving to be the difference at this stage. Firebirds just don’t have an answer to them. And the Mavs team is so clinical today. Barely a mistake. Meanwhile, the turnovers are mounting at the other end. Mavericks 31-23.
Easily the best the Mavericks have looked so far this season. Nankivell and Jovic are letting the ball go to Jok and finding circle edge easily, they aren’t taking each other’s space like past weeks. Liv Lewis playing well again at GK.
Meanwhile Dwan’s feeds to Wallam are way off. Not sure what’s happening with Dwan this season? She seems hesitant on the pass/shot and unsure of her role.
1/2 time: Mavericks 37-27
A comfortable half time lead for Mavs and well deserved. They’re on top in almost every measure; better shooting %, more gains, more deflections, less penalties, less turnovers. Jok has been terrific. 29/31, 3 rebounds, no turnovers.
Donelle on the bench! I don’t care how bad a day she is having, she’s still miles better than Moore or Dwan. Dwan has not impressed this season. A player of Wallam’s quality should not be hard to feed. The Mavs have this. I know it’s been said before but the fact that Jok nearly didn’t play SSN is mind blowing. She is there star at the moment.
Emily Moore and Tippah Dwan now teaming up in the shooting circle for Firebirds. It’s not working any better. Mavs now lead 42-29.
Honestly I don’t think Dwan is the problem in this attack end
Wallam just looks to have lost so much energy and passion
Last season dwan played with Cardwell and Horjus and there was consistency and energy in the front line
Lots of other GS would be pulling in these feeds but wallam seems frustrated and doesn’t care to fight for possession
Whilst dwan has been patchy I feel that she wants it more and is happier being at firebirds whereas wallam looks like she wants out
3/4 time: Mavericks 52-41
The lead got out to as much as 16 in the 3rd Q, before good Firebirds defence and some late super shots narrowed the gap. Mavs still comfortably on top though. Molly Jovic, Shimona Jok and Olivia Lewis starring for them.
I don’t think even Jok would pull in low feeds dropping down in front of her and straight to Lewis’ hands. Wallam is definitely an emotion player though, agree.
Jok’s accent is a wild blend of Jamaican and Australian, and can I detect a slight hint of English somehow?
Full time: Mavericks 69-62
Firebirds won the last Q, in fact, they won the 2nd half, but the damage was done in the 1st half with a commanding performance from Mavs. They get their second win for the season, and go ahead of Firebirds. Jok a well deserved POTM.
